It’s hard to believe, but there are still myriad creatures to be discovered in this world. Between 2010 and 2013, more than 400 species were found in the Amazon alone. And in mid-December of this year, researchers in Brazil discovered a new tapir species — the first in a century. Here we take a look at 13 of the strangest, creepiest and neatest animals brought to our attention in the past year, plus one awesome flower. Many were first noticed in 2013. But science often tends to take its time making its discoveries known, meaning some of the species were found earlier. (We still felt they were cool enough to make the roundup.)
