Here’s How Mindfulness Is More Effective Than Drugs For Both Depression And Anxiety

We all know approximately what meditation is, but what exactly is mindful meditation? Mindful meditation is a form of intentional, focused meditation in which you focus on the current thoughts you’re having and sensations you’re experiencing. And according to a new study published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, this type of meditation is more effective at relieving anxiety and depression that common medications.

D. Madhav Goyal of the John Hopkins School of Medicine led the study published in JAMA and definitively singled out mindful meditation as the most effective treatment.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that mindfulness performs as well as or better than medication,” says Adrian Wells, professor of psychopathology at Manchester University and a adviser to the charity Anxiety UK. “In the group work that I’ve done with sufferers of anxiety or depression, I’ve found it very beneficial because it calms the mind. It’s not a new thing.”

Man Cleans Up Entire River On His Way To Work

Tommy Kleyn walked past a polluted river on his way to his job in the Netherlands every day. The Netherlands are well known for environmental stewardship, so this polluted river didn’t make much sense. Kleyn decided to take action by picking up the river a little bit at a time after work.

“It took me about 30 minutes to fill one garbage bag with trash, but one bag doesn’t make a dent in a place as polluted as this. I vowed to fill one bag of trash each day as I passed this spot,” Kleyn said.

Every day, Kleyn documented how the river was transformed by his work by taking pictures and sharing them on a new Facebook page called Project Schone SchieIn just six days, Kleyn had made some impressive progress with his cleanup effort. Eventually the neighbors took notice and began helping him.

“The idea is to motivate people to fill one garbage bag with litter each year. It only takes 30 minutes, it really makes a difference and you will be amazed about how good you feel afterwards,” he said.

6 Reasons Why Everyone Should Be Living In An Earthship

Earthships are sustainable homes that can be built out of a variety of waste and earth. They’re rad in ways no other house can match.

1. Sustainability does not mean living primitively

When you think about offgrid living, what comes to mind? 18th century candle light living? Not the case. As you can see, just because you’re living sustainably doesn’t mean you’re living in a cave without running water or anything.

2. There’s the free food.

An earthship’s passive solar unit can double as a greenhouse for year-round vegetables. You can also utilize your home’s abilities to catch rain water for watering and other graywater uses.

26 Life Changing Lessons From Eckart Tolle That Will Change Your Perspective

1. This moment right now is precious. Live fully in it.

“Time isn’t precious at all, because it is an illusion. What you perceive as precious is not time but the one point that is out of time: the Now. That is precious indeed. The more you are focused on time—past and future—the more you miss the Now, the most precious thing there is.”

“As soon as you honor the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out the present-moment awareness, whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care, and love – even the most simple action.”

“Most humans are never fully present in the now, because unconsciously they believe that the next moment must be more important than this one. But then you miss your whole life, which is never not now.”

“Don’t let a mad world tell you that success is anything other than a successful present moment.”

“People don’t realize that now is all there ever is; there is no past or future except as memory or anticipation in your mind.”

8 Survival Skills Our Great-Grandparents Knew But We’ve Mostly Forgotten

For better or for worse, our modern society has made us dependent upon what many of us call the system. We go to the store and there’s our food. We go to the local hardware store and there’s our tools and wood. We pay a bill and expect our homes to be warm. But we didn’t always live like that. There was a time before this supply chain existed where we did a lot more for ourselves. I’d like to talk about 8 survival skills you should relearn.

1. Gardening for food.

This is an important one. On an individual level, we become more self-reliant and healthy. In the larger scheme, locally grown food, and that includes food you’ve grown yourself, is a key part of poverty reduction and being able to effectively feed 7 billion people or more. But how is it done?

It’s not terribly difficult. At its most basic, all you need is sun, seed, dirt and water. Of course, there’s a lot more to it than that, and this primer will help you navigate the process of starting your own garden.

2. Animal husbandry...

Minerals are “naturally occurring substance that is solid and inorganic representable by a chemical formula, and has an ordered atomic structure.” While there are over 4,900 different types of stones and minerals, the ones pictured below absolutely took our breath away. Do you have a picture of a beautiful stone or mineral? Share it with us in the comments below!

Marijuana Prohibition May Be Ruled Unconstitutional In California This Month

On March 25th, Judge Mueller of the Sacramento Division of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California will announce her verdict for United States v. Schweder. The case will likely determine whether or not the Schedule I status for cannabis is constitutional or not. Being a Schedule I drug puts it in the same category as heroin.

Once this verdict is issued, it will almost certainly be appealed by whichever side loses. If so, it’ll go to the 9th circuit court. If it’s upheld, it will apply to states within the 9th circuit. If it’s appealed again, it’ll head to the US Supreme Court, which applies to the entire nation.

John Balazs, an attorney in Sacramento, sums the nature of the case up nicely:

In short, the defense brief argues that the evidence failed to support the continued inclusion of marijuana in Schedule I...

Dwarf Galaxies Found Orbiting The Milky Way, Like Galactic Moons

The illustration you see above maps out the previously discovered dwarf satellite galaxies (in blue) and eight of the newly discovered candidates (in red) as they sit outside the Milky Way. The image was put together by Yao-Yuan Mao, Ralf Kaehler, Risa Wechsler (KIPAC/SLAC)

Astronomers were stunned by the discovery of nine potential dwarf galaxies orbiting our galaxy. It marks the largest number ever discovered at once. The findings were published in two studies available on arXiv.

Dozens of dwarf galaxies were spotted in 2005 and 2006 above the northern hemisphere. The nine new galaxies were found in a small patch of sky above the southern hemisphere near the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. These galaxies are about a million times smaller and a billion times dimmer than the Milky Way itself. This makes them a challenge to find.

NASA Quietly Tests Engine That Uses No Fuel And Violates The Laws Of Physics

uss

NASA has successfully tested a new space drive that doesn’t use a propellant and shouldn’t work, at least according to the laws of physics, according to a story that broke in Wired.UKThe drive, called the Cannae Drive, worked in the NASA directed test, defying physics.

The Cannae Drive is based on the work of Roger Shawyer, a British scientist, who conceived what’s called the EMDrive. It works by bouncing microwaves in an enclosed chamber, thus creating thrust. Shawyer was never able to get anyone interested in his device, despite numerous demonstrations. His critics simply rejected the device entirely, pointing out that it violates the conservation of motion.

The Chinese quietly tested their own version of the EMDrive at up to 72 grams of thrust, which is enough to be a satellite thruster. This device has not yet been reported on in too many places and few believed it to be possible.

Scientists Say Life Is Likely On Enceladus, Saturn’s Icy Moon

enceladus

Scientists have turned their attention to yet another celestial body in our solar system – Enceladus – as a potential site for life outside of the Earth.

Scientists announced in a new study published in Nature that the icy moon of Saturn likely has an active hydrothermal system. That means that there is warm running water under the icy, cracked, cratered surface of this moon.

Enceladus first indicated itself a candidate for life outside of our planet when Cassini first saw plumes of water vapor bursting from its south pole in 2005. It was unclear up until now where those plumes were coming from and why.
