Cannabis as Medicine: How CBD (Cannabidiol) Benefits the Brain and Nervous System

By Audrey Lefebvre, RN

Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an active cannabinoid found in cannabis which, unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), does not produce a psychoactive effect in the brain. For this reason, CBD has become a primary focus of medicinal cannabis studies.

CBD has been found to have a wide range of benefits, including lowering blood sugar levels, promoting bone growth, and importantly, protecting the human brain and nervous system from degeneration.

How CBD Protects the Nervous System

The nervous system is comprised of two main parts: the peripheral nervous system, which includes the nerves and ganglia on the outside of the brain and spinal cord, and the central nervous system, which includes the brain, cranial nerves, spiral cord, etc. CBD prevents the degeneration of the nervous system in several ways.

7 Health Benefits of Vibroacoustic (Sound & Vibration) Therapy

By Deb Wellmes, MA, SLP, ND
Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Like waves of vibration that are eternally connected and influenced by one another, our understanding and appreciation of vibro-tactile healing has ebbed and flowed. Ancient traditions recognized vibration and sound as an important method for returning to balance and healing. Some of the ways these traditions have used sound and vibration include: music, chanting, prayer, toning, and the use of instruments such as drums, bells, singing bowls, gongs, and wind instruments.

As Ancient traditions fell from favor, we lost sight of the powerful benefits of vibro-tactile healing. It has taken great thinkers and scientists millennia to return to this lost knowledge. Perhaps we are so comforted by vibration and sound because as humans, our first experiences within the womb were known and felt as vibration (e.g., our mother’s heartbeat and voice). All matter vibrates and the human body is no different.

Sleep Problems Come From the Day Not the Night

By Dawn Walton
Guest Writer for Wake Up World

Many people struggle with sleep. Some struggle to get to sleep, some wake up multiple times through the night and others don’t get a very long sleep. Some people have all of these problems.

When most people try to address insomnia, they focus on the symptoms and not the cause. Countless remedies (medicinal and non-medicinal) are out there to help address sleep problems.

In my experience as a cognitive hypnotherapist, to address sleep problems effectively and permanently, you need to address the cause, not the symptoms; and the cause comes from the daytime.

The Role Great Sex Plays in Female Creativity

By Carolanne Wright
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

“To understand the vagina properly is to realize that it is not only coextensive with the female brain, but is also, essentially, part of the female soul.” ~ Naomi Wolf

As a culture, we typically don’t view female anatomy as something intricately linked with creativity, power, drive, focus, courage or motivation. Either it’s something to be shamed through religious traditions or exploited with pornography, advertising and the media at large. Even so, the 1960’s saw a movement towards accepting and admiring the female form as “goddess.” We still see small pockets of it today. And the idea of the “muse” has a long history of inspiring some of the greatest art known to man.

Up until this point, however, most of the glorification of the female body has dealt squarely in the realm of external beauty. Author Naomi Wolf believes this stance is severely limited, and in her book “Vagina: A New Biography“, she challenges some of our most ingrained assumptions about feminine sexuality and form, revealing how a woman’s bodily experience has far reaching influence over every aspect of life.

Synthetic Forests: The Enormous Risks of Genetically Engineered Trees

By Dr Joseph Mercola
Guest Writer for Wake Up World

If the biotech industry has its way, 184 million acres of native forests around the world will be bulldozed down and replaced with plantations of genetically engineered (GE) trees.

On these proposed GE tree plantations, there are essentially no other plants, insects, birds, or wildlife — just rows upon rows of cloned Frankentrees growing at accelerated rates on a crust of dead, lifeless soil above dwindling groundwater reserves.

Moreover, GE trees are being genetically engineered with unnatural characteristics, such as the ability to kill insects, tolerate colder temperatures, resist toxic chemicals, and grow faster — but these “advantages” come at an unacceptable price.

Leaving a Legacy of Destruction: Fracking Industry Threatens U.S. National Parks

By Carolanne Wright
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

As if it wasn’t bad enough to have fracking operations in our backyards — destroying local ecosystems, human health and property values — the oil and gas industry has expanded into public lands, with many national parks now under threat. Not only does fracking for petroleum and natural gas promote ecological and climatic changes, but it also destroys the water we drink and the air we breathe. Not to mention the practice has been linked to an increase of earthquakes. Moreover, waste generated by the industry is exceptionally toxic and difficult to dispose of safely — to the point where municipalities are resorting to spraying it on roadways, and other acts of insanity. Keep in mind fracking fluid contains a slew of hazardous chemicals and is oftentimes radioactive.

Seed Bombs: A Creative (and Fun) Mission to Save the Bees and Butterflies

By Carolanne Wright
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

By now most are aware of the dire situation of the honeybee: dwindling numbers, collapsed colonies and dying hives — which endangers not only honey production, but also the food supply. We face a stark reality if bee numbers continue to decline, some foods will become downright impossible to grow — such as almonds, certain berries and apples. Not to mention bees contribute approximately $15 billion to U.S. crop production. If they all but disappear, the economy will be hard hit.

And it’s not just honeybees at risk. Wild pollinators — thousands of breeds of bees, butterflies, moths and birds — are in trouble as well. Some speculate GMOs are the cause of the shrinking numbers, others claim pesticides — especially those of the neonicotinoid and glyphosate class — are at the root of the problem. Many believe it’s a combination of both. While environmental advocacy groups and corporate chemical companies battle it out, grassroots efforts have taken the matter in hand and have cultivated an innovative solution to the issue. One such organization is the Great Seed Bomb.

New Moon and Solar Eclipse in Pisces – Removing the Boundaries to Our Sacredness

By Simon Vorster & Jennifer Langstone
Contributing Writers for Wake Up World

Humanity has collectively come to see spirit and matter as antagonistic to each other, and so, believing we must choose one over the other — the spiritual or the earthly — we have become embedded in an unresolveable polarity that keeps us from embracing our true sacred nature: which is both spiritual and earthly.

A prime example of this polarity is the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. Almost everyone to a certain degree holds the awareness of this story from the Bible, a version of which also appears in the Qur’an, in which humanity is cast out of Heaven for choosing to eat the fruits of the Tree of Knowledge. Depicting a tale of humanity’s inherent “sinfulness” and a need for redemption from our very nature, this story and the deeper meaning it reinforces has left a stain on the collective unconscious psyche that impacts us in ways so damaging that many cannot even comprehend it. In essence, this seminal narrative, among others, teaches us to reject and undermine the experience of the physical senses, and to carry a deeply unnatural lack of self-love and self-acceptance of our human selves.

The Top 10 Most Restrictive, False and Dangerous Religious Beliefs

By Makia Freeman
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

Religion has caused a lot of unnecessary pain to mankind, despite whatever truth and good intentions their followers may hold. Restrictive, false and dangerous religious beliefs abound throughout the world, and dominate the mainstream teachings of organized religion.

Some of these dangerous religious beliefs fool you into thinking you can out-source your morality, ethics or spirituality to some external organization. Others prevent you from taking full responsibility for yourself and your actions, thus hindering you from stepping fully into your power. Others goad you into a false sense of security where there is none. All of them limit you and the deeper realization of Who You Are, and all of them stem from the single fundamental delusion of separateness, i.e. that we are discrete and separate beings, that some people are better than others and that there is somewhere better you need to get to. It is an idea based on separateness leads to judgment and exclusion, and can never be as true and powerful as one based on connectedness.

Dream On! Lucid Dreaming Improves Self Awareness and Metacognition

By Christina Lavers
Contributing Writer for Wake Up World

Dreams, a series of images, emotions and sensations that flow from the unconscious during sleep, belong to the mysterious, unquantifiable side of life. We all experience them, yet for many they are quickly forgotten or disregarded. However, for those who bother to pay attention to dreams they can be potent tools of self-discovery that not only help us to understand ourselves at deeper levels, but also allow us to play and explore in a way that is not possible in normal waking experience.

Usually when we dream we are not aware that what we are experiencing is occurring in our mind’s eye. Though the content can be illogical, confusing and downright strange, most of us generally just float along through the experience, often recognising that the events we are witnessing are bizarre, but not arriving at he level of awareness where we understand that we are immersed in a dream. However, as more people are discovering, it is possible to become conscious that we are dreaming; this is the phenomenon known as lucid dreaming.
