Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight!

will's picture

The Americas should get an excellent view of the "Blood Moon" tonight. This will be a full lunar eclipse, which means the Moon enters fully into the Earth's shadow. The eclipse starts around 2 a.m. EDT (11 p.m. PDT), with the effects most visible around 3 a.m. EDT (12 a.m. PDT).

As with all eclipses, there's various predictions going around about what's supposed to happen afterwards, everything from ascension to doomsday. There's also people pointing on that this lunar eclipse, as well the 3 to follow, all occur on Jewish holidays. Since the Jewish holidays are based upon a lunar calendar, certain holidays always happen on full moons. Lunar eclipses also always occur on full moons, so the fact that the eclipses and the Jewish holidays line up doesn't exactly seem like an incredible coincidence to me.

Happy moon-gazing!

'Cherry tree from space' mystery baffles Japan

will's picture

TOKYO: A cosmic mystery is uniting monks and scientists in Japan after a cherry tree grown from a seed that orbited the earth for eight months bloomed years earlier than expected — and with very surprising flowers.

The four-year-old sapling — grown from a cherry stone that spent time aboard the International Space Station (ISS) — burst into blossom on April 1, possibly a full six years ahead of Mother Nature's normal schedule.

Its early blooming baffled Buddhist brothers at the ancient temple in central Japan where the tree is growing.

"We are amazed to see how fast it has grown," Masahiro Kajita, chief priest at the Ganjoji temple in Gifu, told AFP by telephone.

"A stone from the original tree had never sprouted before. We are very happy because it will succeed the old tree, which is said to be 1,250 years old."

"Giving Yourself A Break" Could Add Years to Your Life

will's picture

From MDConnects:

Chill out- it might add years to your life, according to researchers.

New research reveals that lifespan could be affected by how people deal with stress. The latest findings suggest that learning to adequately deal with stress can actually add years to your life.

U.S. researchers from The Brandeis University found that people who forgive themselves for mistakes are physically healthier than those who obsess over them.

Researchers said that the latest study shows that that the secret to longevity is to take it easy and give yourself a break.

The study revealed a link between a self-compassionate attitude and lower levels of stress-induced inflammation.  Researchers defined self-compassion as behaviors like self-forgiveness, or giving yourself a break. People with high levels of self-compassion generally do not blame themselves for stress beyond their control and are more likely to move on from an argument, rather than obsessively thinking about it for days on end.

Tobacco plant has key to fighting cancer

will's picture

La Trobe University research has revealed a tobacco plant’s natural defence mechanisms could be harnessed to kill cancer cells in the human body.

Scientists at the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science have identified that a molecule occurring in the flower of the plant that fights off fungi and bacteria also has the ability to identify and destroy cancer.

The defence molecule, called NaD1, works by forming a pincer-like structure that grips onto lipids present in the membrane of cancer cells and rips it open, causing the cell to expel its contents and explode.

The results are published in the journal eLife today.

Lead investigator Dr Mark Hulett said the discovery has potential for use in cancer treatment.

‘There is some irony in the fact that a powerful defence mechanism against cancer is found in the flower of a species of ornamental tobacco plant, but this is a welcome discovery, whatever the origin,’ Dr Hulett said.

Ocean discovered on Enceladus [Saturn's Moon] may be best place to look for alien life

will's picture

Researchers have discovered a deep saltwater ocean on one of the many small moons that orbit Saturn, leading scientists to conclude it is the most likely place in the solar system for extraterrestrial life to be found.

Gravitational field measurements taken by Nasa's Cassini space probe revealed that a 10km-deep ocean of water, larger than Lake Superior, lurks beneath the icy surface of Enceladus at the moon's south pole.

David Stevenson, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said the body of water was so large it "may extend halfway or more towards the equator in every direction. It might even extend all the way to the north."

We Are Spiritual Beings Dressed In Bio-Body Suits - Our Thoughts Are Powerful Enough To Change Physical Reality - Professor Says

Isis Ra's picture

There are scientists who think we have unlimited powers of which we are unaware of.

It is possible to expand traditional science to include human consciousness and human intention to such a degree that we can change what we define as "physical reality"?

Professor William A. Tiller is someone many people would describe as a scientist ahead of his time.

His ideas and theories are intriguing, though-provoking and challenging to the orthodox scientific community. He invites people on a journey beyond traditional science.

Among many things, Professor Tiller is convinced that we can evolve our mind and emotions to such an extent that we actually influence our daily lives in physical reality.

In other words, he suggests that our thoughts can change reality.

He also has a different view on the human body and the nature of consciousness.

Professor Tiller sees humans as spirits dressed in bio-body suits and we enormous powers of which we are unaware. According to Tiller, consciousness is a byproduct of spirit entering dense matter.

Neuroplasticity: Your Brain’s Amazing Ability to Form New Habits - The Unbounded Spirit

brain nerves

One of the most popular areas of research in psychology these days is neuroplasticity.  Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to restructure itself after training or practice.  In many ways, neuroplasticity is what makes personal growth and development possible at its most basic level.  With the understanding that change is indeed possible, you’re able to focus on the ways in which you’d like to grow instead of whether or not it’s achievable for you.  It’s possible, it’s proven, and now it’s up to you!

We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. ~Aristotle

will's picture

Interesting parts of a University of Utah press release:

Today's event is the largest earthquake at Yellowstone since February 22, 1980, and occurred near the center of a region of recent ground uplift described in a YVO Information Statement on February 18, 2014. The Yellowstone Volcano Observatory has been tracking this uplift episode for about 7 months.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations reports that a light earthquake occurred at 06:34 AM on March 30, 2014 (MDT). The epicenter of the magnitude 4.8 shock was located 4 miles north-northeast of Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This earthquake is part of a series of earthquakes that began in this area on Thursday, March 27. As of 8:15 am today, this series has included at least 25 earthquakes in addition to the main shock, with the largest of magnitude 3.1. The magnitude 4.8 main shock was reported felt in Yellowstone National Park and in the towns of West
Yellowstone and Gardiner, Montana.
