Southern Australia set to bake again while the east remains cool

Another round of heat will be making its ways across SA, VIC, TAS and western NSW from today until the weekend. Have you ever wondered why? In Adelaide, temperatures will be on the rise from today peaking in the mid 40s on Saturday before a cool change early on Sunday. The cool relief, however, will not last as temperatures will gradually increase again next week reaching the mid 40s yet again by Thursday. Melburnians will experience similar conditions, with temperatures in the high 30s on Saturday before a late-morning/midday cool change on Sunday. Temperatures will then gradually raise early next week, reaching the mid 30s by Thursday 13th before yet another cool change.

Shanghai Sets All-Time Record High as Brutal Heat Continues

Following a deadly heat wave that ended July, the temperature is soaring even higher in Shanghai this week.

Temperatures climbed to 40.6 degrees C (105.1 degrees F) at Xujiahui Observatory, Shanghai's benchmark observing location, on Tuesday according to ShanghaiDaily.com. This equaled the previous all-time record high temperature.

The record would be short-lived as ShanghaiDaily.com reported the high reached 40.8 degrees C (105.4 degrees F) on Wednesday setting a new official all-time record high.

Other temperatures across the city ranged from 39 to 41 degrees C (102-106 degrees F) Tuesday through Thursday.

Heat Wave Death Toll Rises in U.K.

A heat wave in England is being blamed for hundreds of premature deaths, and a wildfire warning has been issued as the mercury continues to rise. Research conducted for The Times by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated the death toll for the first nine days of the heat wave as between 540 and 760 people in England alone.

 

"The excess is likely to have been overwhelmingly among the elderly, especially over 75, some of which may have been among people who would have died just a few weeks later if there had been no heat wave," Ben Armstrong, an epidemiological statistician, told Reuters.

Heat Wave Persists in West as Flooding Threatens East

Temperatures in the U.S. West will reach as much as 20 degrees above normal today while heavy rain threatens the East Coast, the National Weather Service said.

The high may be 111 Fahrenheit (44 Celsius) in Bakersfield, California, and 103 in Sacramento as another day of baking heat takes hold in the West, the agency said.

At least one person has reportedly died and dozens more have been treated for exhaustion and dehydration as a heat wave continues to cause problems across western America.

Air-conditioned "cooling centres" have been set up in California, Nevada and Arizona, as officials warn the high temperatures could be life-threatening.

Temperatures will be at full throttle heading into the weekend over the interior West, reaching dangerous levels, challenging records and elevating the wildfire threat.

While many folks over the interior West are accustomed to and expect hot weather during the summer the developing pattern will take the heat to the extreme. In some cities record highs for any date throughout the year could be equaled or breached.
