Raung (East Java): Mild strombolian activity is taking place from the intra-crater cone, a recent photo shows.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): AVO posted a picture showing the erupting intra-caldera cone emitting a lava flow and producing mild strombolian explosions.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Following the relatively calm phase over the past week, CENAPRED lowered the alert level back to Yellow phase 2 (from 3).

Mt. Reventador: eruption intensifies at second Ecuadorean volcano

theextinctionprotocol-Julu 17, 2013

July 17, 2013 QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Scientists say lava flow and ash and gas emissions have intensified at a second Ecuadorean volcano, Reventador, as the full-bore eruption of the Tungurahua cone continues. Ecuador’s Geophysics Institute says the lava flow on Reventador’s southern flank has increased since Saturday but poses no immediate threat to villagers in the region 60 miles (100) kilometers) east of the capital, Quito. The 11,400-foot (3,475-meter) volcano is nearly three times that distance from Tungurahua to the southwest. It has been roaring since Sunday, when 200 people were evacuated from its flanks and one pyroclastic blast was heard as far away as the coastal city of Guayaquil. Tungurahua is 16,480 feet (5,023 meters) high and has been active since 1999. Reventador had its last big eruption in November 2002

Volcanoes 'SCREAM' before erupting, say scientists

Mail Online,By Sarah Griffiths

Some volcanoes 'scream' at ever-higher pitches before they erupt, scientists claim

New research has discovered that volcanoes can sometimes 'scream' at ever-higher pitches just before they erupt.

Scientists at the University of Washington analysed an eruption sequence at Alaska's Redoubt Volcano and found what they describe as audible 'screams' that followed seismic activity as the changed from steady pulses to rapid tremors.

The researchers also believe that this research and the rise in the frequency of earthquakes and the tremors they cause in the ground could be used to predict future volcanic eruptions.

The study said that it is not unusual for swarms of small earthquakes to precede a volcanic eruption.

They can reach a point of such rapid succession that they create a signal called a 'harmonic tremor' that is inaudible to humans as it is such a low frequency.

Ecuador’s Tungurahua volcano violently explodes: tremors felt for hundreds of miles

theextinctionprotocol-July 15,2013

July 15, 2013ECUADORAt least 200 people have been evacuated after a volcano in Ecuador erupted and spewed ash miles into the air. The “strong explosion” at the Tungurahua volcano could be felt hundreds of miles away, the Geophysics Institute reported. It spewed stones, gases and ash more than 5 km (3.1 miles) into the sky, authorities said. The clouds of ash and gas could be seen as far away as the capital Quito, about 153km (95 miles) north of the volcano. There were no reported deaths, according to local media. Authorities declared an “orange alert,” the second highest warning level after red, following the eruption at 6.47 am local time on Sunday. Residents were evacuated from villages in areas near the volcano on the eastern Andean range, said Lourdes Mayorga from the National Risk Management Secretariat. Some residents had issues evacuating because of the volcanic rocks and minor flooding following heavy rains. After remaining dormant for eight decades, Tungurahua – “throat of fire” in the local Quichua language – rumbled back to life in 1999 and has been active ever since. –Sky News
