Night sky watcher David Kingham took this photo of the Perseid meteor shower from Snowy Range in Wyoming on August 12, 2012.

 

Gear up to see some great balls of fire flashing through the sky this month.

According to NASA research [2], the upcoming Perseid meteor shower [3] produces more fireballs — bright meteors that streak across the sky — than any other annual shower, earning [2] it the title of "fireball champion".
