A very strong and deep earthquake measuring M6.9 (downgraded from M7.1) on the Richter scale was registered in Fiji region on November 1, 2014 at 18:57 UTC. USGS [2] is reporting depth of 434.4 km (269.9 miles). Geoscience Australia [3] is reporting M6.9 at depth of 471 km.
Epicenter was located 141 km (88 miles) NE of Ndoi Island, Fiji and 313 km (194 miles) WNW of Nuku`alofa, Tonga.
There are about 690 people living within 100 km radius.
PTWC said there is no threat of tsunami from this earthquake.
USGS issued green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are vulnerable to earthquake shaking, though some resistant structures exist.
