An astronaut in orbit has snapped a striking view of Super Typhoon Haiyan as it appears from space — an image taken one day after the monster storm devastated the Philippines as it heads toward Vietnam.

NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg spotted Typhoon Haiyan through a window on the International Space Station on Saturday (Nov. 9), just one day after the storm caused widespread damage and loss of life in the Philippines.

Typhoon Haiyan made landfall on the northern Vietnam coast near the Chinese border as a Category 1 storm with 75 mph winds near 21 UTC Sunday. At least 13 people died and 81 were injured in Vietnam from the storm, said the Voice of Vietnam, the country's national radio broadcaster. Satellite loops show that Haiyan has now pushed into Southeastern China, where 4 - 8" of rain will likely cause moderate flooding. Huge 26-foot waves from Haiyan swept 16 people out to sea in Taiwan on Sunday, killing 8 of them, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. Haiyan has been downgraded to a tropical depression and will dissipate later today, finally bringing to an end its catastrophic march through Asia.

Destroyed and damaged houses in the city of Tacloban, Leyte province, in the central Philippines are seen on Nov. 11, 2013. Haiyan, possibly the most powerful typhoon on record, killed thousands of people upon hitting the Philippines.

Rescuers in the Philippines battled to deliver emergency aid to areas ravaged by Super Typhoon Haiyan, which may have killed more than 10,000 people, as blocked roads and constant rainfall hampered relief efforts.

The desperation among survivors in Tacloban city, the capital of Leyte province that bore the brunt of the typhoon’s gale force winds, led Philippine President Benigno Aquino to declare a state of emergency and plead with locals to be patient. While airports reopened, food and other aid was held up by roads that were washed away or covered in debris.

The following Vision came in last month from Lynne Newman whose words are so poetic and touching that we are honored to share them with you. Thanks so much, Lynne.

I see a world where the wonders, signs and gifts given us when we most need them are seen and recognized and these gifts from our Creator are taken deep within our hearts and spirits to give us hope, courage, inspiration and a reminder that we are always heard and cherished. 

I feel a world where these powerful reminders open our hearts and remind us of our interconnectedness to a higher source...to each other....to all life. I envision the breathtaking beauty of our auras glowing with rainbow light as the divine within each of us recognizes and honors the divine within others. I envision a world of such love that we see one another's beauty and delight in the sharing of our gifts. The diamond-like, radiant core of our beings becomes brighter, still, as we openly witness the awakening, opening, and expanding of heart spaces throughout the Universe. Deep within my spirit I see and feel the utter joy of being in LOVE with life.
