Culture Volcans, a volcano blog (in French), alerted me to something interesting in Colombia. The Colombian geological survey, INGEOMINAS, is installing its first seismometer at the little-known volcanic area known as Laguna San Diego (or Volcan San Diego) in the province of Caldas. San Diego is one of the northernmost outposts of potential volcanism in Colombia and very little is known about the volcano — and you’d likely miss it if you weren’t looking. The Landsat 7 image of the area taken 2002 shows the lake that lies within a small crater whose rim has clearly been weathered and vegetated. The lake itself is small, only about a kilometer across and about 1.3 kilometers long while the crater in which the lake is nested is only ~2.5 by 3 kilometers. Perched on the edge is a small stratovolcano (or possibly a cinder cone) of unknown age known as Morro de San Diego. All in all, a fairly small geographic feature nestled in the mountains 90 kilometers southeast of Medellin. Geologists from the University of Texas, Austin, have discovered a sunken chain of volcanic islands that may have blocked an ocean current around Antarctica tens of millions of years ago. The discovery could help explain anomalies in ancient climate data, which could improve models used to predict Earth's future climate as carbon dioxide builds in the atmosphere. Ancient volcanoes discovered deep in the ocean off Antarctica may explain a climate mystery critical to predicting Earth’s fate as humans pump more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

~ Today I was guided to draw a card from the Romance Angels deck, and the one that presented itself to me is entitled “Retreat.”  It’s meaning is actually pretty straightforward, and whether we are in a relationship or not, we are being guided by the Angels to use this weekend to take a step back from the world and focus on the people in our lives who are closest to our hearts.  We are being told to disconnect from all of the external chatter and stimulation.  Set aside those unfinished projects for a little while, skip the parties and the shopping, turn off the phones and the TV and revel in the peace of your own Sacred Space.

Chocolate can be extremely healthful and beneficial to your health, but before you get carried away with those common candy bars from childhood, understand that the superfood nutritional qualities come from cacao or cocoa, the bitter seeds from which chocolate is made.

It’s best to select chocolates labeled Fair Trade and organic with at least 70% cacao or cocoa (both words indicate the same bean) and no sweeter than bitter-sweet. The more bitter the better. Anything less is too watered down with milk and saturated with unhealthful refined sugar, or worse, HFCS corn syrup. Actually, the most healthful form of cacao is cacao nibs, small bitter pieces of cacao that you can nibble on, put into coffee, top off a bowl of plain whole milk organic yogurt with raw honey, or throw the nibs into a smoothie. They can be purchased from the spice bulk section of a good health food store.
