Financial aid available for tornado zone

Financial assistance has been made available to Victorian farmers, businesses and charities in ten local government areas affected by fires and tornadoes last month. Low-interest loans of up to $200,000 from the federal and state governments can be accessed through the Rural Finance Corporation.

 

At least 20 people were taken to hospital and homes were damaged and destroyed when the tornado, with peak winds of 250 kilometres an hour, hit the area on March 19. There was considerable damage in the towns of Koonoomoo, near Cobram and Bundalong, on Lake Mulwala. Moira Shire Mayor Brian Keenan says help for those communities will be welcomed.

A taste of winter is about to arrive for much of the southern and eastern regions of New South Wales, with severe weather warnings issued for damaging winds.

 

The gale force winds are expected from the late morning and into the evening in the Hunter, Illawarra, Central Coast, the Snowy Mountains and the Sydney region. Snow has started falling in the Snowy Mountains.

Deadly Iran Earthquake Leaves Thousands Homeless

USGS made significant updates to the depth of the earthquake. It was initially estimated to be at a depth of 9.4 miles below the earth's surface, and the depth is now estimated at 51.0 miles below the earth's surface. The depth of the quake has serious implications on the shaking felt around it. Around the epicenter, strong shaking was felt with light damage possible.

 

A violent, shallow earthquake having a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 has rocked a wide area of southeastern Iran near the Pakistan border.

Severe thunderstorms are rolling across portions of the Midwest, slamming cities from Louisiana through Ohio and Indiana. Conditions are prime for tornadoes and dangerously large hail.

Areas of flooding and mudslides are have been reported in Iowa as high winds whip through parts of Tennessee and Alabama. Meanwhile, power outages have been reported throughout Illinois and Kentucky.

Dust Storm Shuts Arizona-New Mexico Interstate

A dust storm rolled through southeastern Arizona near the New Mexico border Wednesday, closing a 112-mile stretch of Interstate 10. The freeway was reopened Wednesday night after winds died down. Dust storms, or haboobs, are common in the Southwest in spring when strong storm systems move through the Rockies, generating gusty winds.

Birds rule the air, but hundreds of different species have seen a population decline so frightening, experts say they could vanish off the face of the earth at anytime.

As of 2012, more than 1300 bird species are facing extinction, according to BirdLife International. The World's Rarest Birds, a new book, features photos of 800 of those birds.

New: Winter Storm Yogi Brings Late-Season Snow

The latest of late-season snowstorms, Winter Storm Yogi prepared to blanket the Upper Midwest with more snow on Thursday evening after dumping more than two feet of snow in parts of Colorado and Wyoming.

Nebraska

Eastern Nebraska experienced near-blizzard conditions from Yogi on Thursday morning and the state's Department of Transportation urged extreme caution on nearly all roads. More than a foot of snow have fallen in some parts of the state as Yogi finally pulled away Thursday afternoon.
