Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, was seen from multiple states in the U.S. on Oct. 2, lighting up the sky in a magnificent show.

As much as we love the moon, there’s a lot going on up in the sky besides our orbiting satellite. Entries to The Royal Observatory Greenwich’s fifth annual Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition are a poignant reminder of that, capturing the eerie green glow of the aurora borealis, the dusty clouds of distant galaxies and nebulae, the streaks of comets as they pass by overhead.
