Magnesium is an essential mineral for staying healthy and is required for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Multiple health benefits of magnesium include transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth.

Findings published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicated that for every 50 mg per day increase in intake of the mineral, the risk of cancer was modestly reduced by 7%. A notable study of more than 4,600 Americans, begun in 1985, found the risk of developing metabolic syndrome over the next 15 years was 31 percent lower for those with the highest intake of magnesium.

Advice for those with Renal Disease

Reiki Doc's picture

Thank you for this important article! I read with interest. People with heart disease can greatly benefit from increasing the intake of magnesium in their diet.

However, those who have impaired kidney function must take caution. On dialysis, magnesium is not cleared by the dialysis machine. And for people who have increased BUN and Creatinine (earlier stages of Chronic Kidney Disease), the ability of the kidney to clear magnesium from the bloodstream is decreased. Signs of magnesium that is too high are muscle weakness, mental slowing, and respiratory failure due to weakened muscles of breathing. So this article is for 'almost everyone'. For those with a nephrologist or someone 'watching your labs' on the kidney, think again before you follow this advise.

Other things to avoid--Milk of Magnesia, ibuprofen, and all other non-steroidal antiinflammatories. Also be cautious about the antibiotic Gentamicin too. Namaste.
