All Fear is Fear of Intensity

All Fear is Fear of Intensity

The Whole, of course, is all Love. Everything, from the point of view of the Whole, is Love. There are no problems. Death? Not a problem. Suffering? Just Love exploring. In Oneness, it’s all Love.

Then Oneness reflects on itself, becomes Two, and we get duality: light and dark, expansion and contraction, action and rest, more and less. Polarity. Love and Fear.

According to the principles of sacred geometry, Two-ness begets Three-ness which begets all creation. That is a wonderful topic of exploration in itself, but right now I am only addressing how Fear begets its many myriad expressions, the primary colors of which are fear, anger and sadness, and how we can work with that.

In its most simple expression, we can equate Fear with contraction, a movement that closes off, goes in, gets smaller, and pushes away. This direction is opposite to that of the movement of expansion, an energy that explores, investigates, includes, and grows.

The universe is continually creating, expanding, frothing into existence. It is absolutely necessary to be able to assimilate this process for continued maintenance and survival. This is true for all of biological life, and has always been so.

The creation process works in a pulsing rhythm. There is an impulse, and then there is a rest. Polarity. In the forward momentum of the expansive impulse, new innovations arise. In the rest period, observation is possible of how those innovations assimilate. In the rest period we have sensitivity and feedback. This sensitivity influences the next pulse through the assessment of desire. That sensitive assessment can lead to the next impulse being further expansion or a degree of contraction. The play of these impulses dances with redirection.

In biology sensitivity allows discrimination and some control of our assimilation process. Life has the ability to detect toxic substances, and reject inclusion of that which leads to breakdown, that is, until the pressure of intensity requires radical innovation. A prime example is how in the evolution of life on our planet, the first creatures, bacteria, produced an overabundance of oxygen, their waste, to the point where it became nearly lethal to their survival. And then life innovated assimilating oxygen as an energy source.

As life becomes inevitably more complex, the ability to metabolize toxins into nourishment becomes ever more innovative and allows evolution into greater levels of order and intelligence.

Fear is the simple label we give to the primary movement away from that which we cannot yet assimilate. One could define toxins as that which we do not (yet) know how to metabolize. We sense the toxin as an intensity that presses on us. The choice is to metabolize, avoid or break down. Thrive, survive or die.

So let’s put this into more human terms, something to which we can relate in our daily lives. Specifically, I want to address how this process impacts our emotions.

Under all our dysfunctional, fearful emotions is fear of the intensity of feeling what we perceive to be toxic. We experience influxes of energy that we are afraid to assimilate, that we feel are too intense to metabolize. There are visceral clenches we produce to hide our unmetabolized anger, sadness and fear. With time these clenches become chronic. The impulse to reject the intensity of the feeling manifests as expression or suppression of the feeling. Neither expression nor suppression allows metabolization.

With unassimilated anger, the perceived intensity spawns a strong push back. With unassimilated sadness, we fear the intensity of collapse into annihilation. With unassimilated fear, the intensity of the energy can produce flight or freezing, or a shift into the fight of anger. All of these emotions can feed each other and rotate into primary position as we respond to the resisted intensity.

So how do we encourage metabolism of what we have resisted as toxic? In the emotional realm, we nurture unresisting feeling the intensity. We cultivate fearlessness around our fears.

Rather than express or suppress, we open ourselves to the circulation of the intensity. In the suppression, we have contracted the intensity into the clenched part of our being and frozen it there. With expression, we reject experiencing the intensity in favor of bouncing it out to others to handle. In allowing the circulation, the whole of our being can be informed by the energy. What is not ours to be assimilated is burned up rather than suppressed, and what is to be offered appropriately becomes available to easily communicate and engage.

The skill of unresisted breathing facilitates this metabolism through the body. We can trust that the evolved technology of the Self will metabolize the toxin, leaving us with more intelligence and direction. This is especially true of emotional energy, which has purpose to inform us profitably.

Only our Fear of our fears makes our feelings problematic. Anger unresisted and assimilated is a call to action with precision. Sadness unresisted and assimilated yields compassion and communion. Fear in circulation gives us acute sensitivity and awareness. Our nervous system becomes more robust and resilient as we open to the intensity. We even become healthier physically.

Being fearlessly sensitive, vulnerable, unresistant and appropriately responsive is a mark of a highly evolved individual. As the intensity of life on earth increases, the need to allow this culturally and collectively will help evolve humanity as a whole. Our sensitivity to each others’ intensity will help guide us into innovative, intelligent, creative Love.
