European Union leaders have taken the lead over much of the rest of the world on setting AI policy, forging an agreement to regulate the groundbreaking tech after more than 37 hours of negotiations last week. Their sweeping law, called the AI Act, puts certain controls in place on powerful systems such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, including transparency requirements when it comes to content such as "deepfakes." The law will allow for facial and biometric scanning, though there would be limits and exceptions. The draft proposal still needs formal approval from EU member states and Parliament.
AI regulation in political governance is pivotal to safeguard democratic values, ethical practices, and public trust. It should prioritize ethical AI deployment, accountability, transparency, data privacy, human oversight, international collaboration, adaptability, and public inclusion. Striking the right balance through effective regulation ensures AI technologies contribute positively to political governance, enabling societies to navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI advancements.
