Equinox

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth’s equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. Around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length. At an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: the vernal point and the autumnal point. By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point.

14 more emissions reported at Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano

March 19, 2012 – MEXICO - The Popocatepetl volcano registered 14 exhalations of low intensity accompanied by water vapor, gas and a low amplitude spasmodic tremor, reported the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred).  In its latest report, the agency of the Ministry of the Interior (Interior Ministry) explained that the exhalations of greater intensity occurred yesterday 13:30 and 22:42 hours. He said that although during the night, a glow was observed in the crater, the other metrics do not show major changes, so the light status of volcanic alert remains at yellow stage two.  Observers should expect more moderate exhalations, some with ash emissions, sporadic explosions are also likely to issue short incandescent fragments and slight glow in the crater can also be observed at night. –El Universal

'Extreme, unprecedented' heat wave reaches fifth day

Chicago, USA Records continue to fall during the mid-March heat wave, as temperatures reached 80 degrees for the fifth straight day, and could continue the streak through Wednesday.

"There's extremes in weather, but seeing something like this is impressive and unprecedented," said Richard Castro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Sunday afternoon's 81 degrees continued the record string of 80 degree days in March, which was previously just two, set in 1986.

The earliest time the Chicago area had four consecutive days in the 80s was April 14-17 in 1976. Data for the earliest streak of five days was not available Sunday night.

"This stretch would be rare for April in this area," Castro said. "To see eighty-plus like that is not even a normal occurrence in the month of May."

Before the heat wave, there had only been 10 March days on record that reached 80 degrees, and on average Chicago would see one 80 degree day in March every 14 years.

Following an abnormally warm winter, the latest record-breaking streak started on Wednesday when temperatures reached 81 degrees, and remained in the 80s for more than six hours that day. The average for March 14 is 46 degrees, and for March 18 is 47 degrees, according to the weather service. "it's extreme and unprecedented," Castro said.

The monthly average for March is 37.9 degrees, and as of Sunday, the average at O'Hare for the month is 49.3 degrees and expected to rise.

The forecast for each of the next three days calls for temperatures that could tie or break record highs each day, which will bump the monthly average above 50 degrees.

"With more days like this, that number is just going to continue to warm," Castro said.

Looking further into the spring, the outlook has a greater than normal probability for abnormally warm temperatures to continue, according to meteorologists. "At least into April, this is going to continue," Castro said. Monday's high is expected to reach the upper 70s, but it is possible that it could hit 80, according to meteorologists. The record for March 19 is 78 degrees.

Tuesday will likely break the record, with forecasts calling for highs in the lower 80s, and the previous record of 76 degrees. On Wednesday highs will reach the upper 70s, with the previous record of 77 degrees.

On Thursday the streak, if it reaches eight, will likely end with highs predicted in the upper 60s, and a previous record high of 79 degrees.

 

‪Tornado Warnings For Texas

 

Tornadoes strike Nebraska, flipping tractor-trailer and rail cars

Severe storms overnight in Nebraska, Texas and Ohio damaged homes and tossed rail cars as well as at least one tractor-trailer, and the threat continued Monday with a large part of the central U.S. on alert.

The greatest damage overnight was just outside North Platte, Neb., where two confirmed tornadoes tore roofs off several homes, downed power lines and injured two people.

One twister crossed Interstate 80, flipping a tractor-trailer in its path. The truck's driver was hospitalized.

A rail yard also was hit, with 15 cars derailed or knocked over, the North Platte Telegraph reported. One worker there was hit by flying debris, treated at a hospital and then released.

In central Ohio, tornado sirens went off as large hail and high winds swept through Sunday night. In Gardendale, Texas, two people were hurt when high winds flipped over their mobile home. No tornadoes were reported in either state.

The mix of warm weather in recent weeks with cold pockets across the Midwest and central U.S. has led to an early start to the tornado season.

"It has been an active season already for tornadoes, and that's part of the reason we've scooched up our siren testing starting in March," Paul Johnson, emergency manager for Douglas County in North Dakota, told KETV.

Tornado watches have been issued for parts of Texas and Oklahoma for Monday, while the rest of the central U.S. is under severe weather warnings that include the possibility of large hail and high winds.

The threat will shift slightly to the east on Tuesday, weather.com reported, with parts of Illinois, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas seeing the biggest threat.
