Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon align beautifully for evening sky watchers

A sunset skyshow again? A month ago, Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon aligned beautifully for evening sky watchers around the world. Tonight it's happening again. On March 25th and 26th, the three will form a bright triangle in the western sky at sunset. Marek Nikodem photographed the early stages of the convergence over Szubin, Poland, on March 24th:

Big Sunspot 1429 still erupting, Sunspots 1445 and 1444 pose a new threat

n morning of March 24, a near M-Class flare took place around Sunspot 1445 at around 08:50-09:00 UTC. There was a gap in data on the GOES X-Ray Flux graph, however it was picked up on the EVE Diode X-Ray signal. Comparing it to yesterday’s M1.0, it looks like this flare registered as a long duration C9.

Backyard Birders Spy Something New - Unusual Bird Counts

Spotted. Amateur birders counted more than four times as many snowy owls in the United States and southern Canada as last year.

 

The United States and Canada just basked in an unusually mild winter. Temperatures ranked fourth warmest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and many spring flowers are already blooming. But did the birds notice? Definitely, according to the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), an annual tally of bird sightings collected by amateur birders across the United States and Canada. The numbers reveal that the snowy owl population in particular boomed and that many other birds showed up in more northerly latitudes than usual.

4.9 magnitude earthquake rattles Hawaii’s Big Island

March 25, 2012 – HONOLULU – Many people from the Big Island to Oahu felt a magnitude 4.9 earthquake Saturday morning. The quake struck a little after 10:45 a.m., centered just west of Honomu in East Hawaii, at a depth of 27 miles. There are no reports of major damage or injuries. Scientists say the earthquake was too small to generate a tsunami and the weight of the Big Island settling is the likely cause. Geologists at the Hawaiian Volcanoes Observatory say there have been no aftershocks so far, and there’s been no change in the ongoing eruption at Kilauea Volcano. -KITV
