Curcumin causes colon cancer cells to self-destruct

In the study, researchers looked at three kinds of colon cancer cells, p53(+/+), p53(-/-) HCT-116, and p53 HT-29. Cancer cell death was observed through curcumin's ability to reduce pro-caspase-3 levels, polymerase-1 cleavage and chromatin condensation. In a time- and dosage-dependent manner, curcumin caused wild-type p53 HCT-116 cells to self-destruct, while obliterating mutant p53 HT-29 cells in their tracks.

 

The researchers were so astounded that they proposed that curcumin may actually have therapeutic potential in the management of colon cancer. With its ability to inhibit the growth of neoplastic cells, curcumin is king against colon cancer. In the presence of curcumin, colon cancer cells went through a process of phosphorylation, which is a complete altering of the function and activity of certain protein enzymes. This was all for the better, as oxidative stress was alleviated and superoxide anion production was increased.

Archeologists in Nepal Say They Have Found Oldest Buddhist Shrine

KATMANDU, Nepal -- Archeologists in Nepal say they have discovered traces of a wooden structure dating from the sixth century B.C. that they believe is the world's oldest Buddhist shrine. Kosh Prasad Acharya, who teamed with archeologists from Britain's Durham University, said Tuesday that the structure was unearthed inside the sacred Mayadevi Temple in Lumbini. Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is generally thought to have been born in about the sixth century B.C. at the temple site. The findings were published in the December issue of the journal Antiquity.

Winter Storm Boreas Update: 14 Deaths as Storm Marches East with Snow, Ice, Rain

The massive Winter Storm Boreas, already blamed for at least fourteen deaths, is trekking east today and spreading its travel misery with a mix of dangerous snow, sleet, ice, and heavy rain. This morning, the worst of the storm is in the Appalachians and interior Northeast. By Wednesday, Boreas will impact the entire East Coast, creating havoc on the roads and in the air on the busiest travel day of the year.

 

"This morning, I'm really concerned about parts of Virginia and North Carolina and the Roanoke, Virginia area in particular," said The Weather Channel's winter weather expert Tom Niziol. "That area is getting a glaze of ice with reports of ice on I-81. That will continue for a few hours as temperatures stay below freezing but by noon that will change over to rain and it will be heavy!"

Lightning starts three fires near Narrabri

The Rural Fire Service says three fires broke out near Narrabri on Monday despite some good recent rain. RFS Deputy Incident Controller, Brett Loughlin, says the blazes started within a 30km radius of Narrabri. He says one was in the Bobbiwa National Park, another on Pikes Lane and the third was on a private property.

 

Brett Loughlin says lightning was a factor in all three and significant resources were deployed. "Some 12 fire trucks, two helicopters and a fixed-wing water-bomber were responded to one fire and thanks to co-ordinated efforts crews were able to bring that fire under control without it posing any threat to property," he said. "However, an area of about 25 hectares was burned out."

Record November rain for Tasmania

The East Coast of Tasmania has been saturated during November, with records being broken in some places. Bicheno has recorded 228mm of rain so far during November, more than four times the average and the wettest on record. Elsewhere, Friendly Beach and St Helens have also been soaked this month with 226mm and 214mm respectively, the heaviest November falls in over a decade. Further south in Hobart, almost double the average November rainfall has been recorded with 80mm for the month.

 

The above average November rainfall was caused by a couple of ideally placed low pressure systems around the 12th to 14th and the 21st to 24th of the month. These low pressure systems were situated in such a way that they directed moist onshore winds and heavy rain onto the east coast of the state for a number of days.

“LEHAR” upgraded to Cyclone status — Heading towards India (strengthens)

Now, upgraded to a Category 1 Cyclone, forecast to develop at least into a Category 2 (as of 4pm CT Nov. 25, 2013).  Cyclone “LEHAR” is currently showing a stronger / brighter center than the previous Super Cyclone “PHAILIN”, when it formed, however the eye of “LEHAR” is not yet developed enough to be seen through yet.

On Sunday, an estimated 20,000 people marched through Paris along with hundreds of ponies and horses, carrying signs criticizing President Francois Hollande.

Profits for the Big Six energy companies have leapt to more than one billion pounds since 2009, according to regulator Ofgem
 

The figures show that together British Gas, E.ON, EDF, npower, ScottishPower and SSE recorded underlying earnings - before interest payments and tax - of £1.19 billion in 2012, up from £221 million in 2009.

But TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said: "Ofgem show excess profits are the real source of soaring energy bills.

It is estimated that 16 tornadoes touched ground this past Sunday, wreaking havoc across Indiana and Illinois. A resident near one of these tornadoes in Noblesville, Indiana caught a strange object zipping around the tornado, despite high winds.
