Minor Lunar Eclipse on Friday: How to See It

lunar-eclipse-friday-observing-guide

For nearly four hours on Friday, at least some part of the southern portion of the moon will be within Earth's pale penumbra, our planet's faint outer shadow. Penumbral lunar eclipses are rather subtle events that are usually difficult to detect unless at least 70 percent of the moon’s diameter shaded.

So the penumbra may be marginally detectable over the moon’s southernmost limb for just a short period centered on the time of the deepest phase/greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. EDT, or 2350 GMT, Friday). At that moment, the penumbra will cover 76.5 percent of the lunar disk.

At one glance, one may think that this image is photoshopped or it’s a composite because it’s simply impossible to see Milky Way galaxy at dusk. But what you’re really seeing here is a single exposure shot of a rare phenomenon, known as zodiacal light (a.k.a. “false dusk”), that I have captured during my recent trip to Mount Bromo in the Southern Hemisphere. Zodiacal light is best seen during spring and autumn, and I chose to visit Mt Bromo a few days after [the Southern Hemisphere's autumnal equinox] as I hoped to capture the zodiacal light along with the 3 planets, 3 volcanoes and a Milky Way galaxy.

What is a penumbral eclipse of the moon?

Desert Gypsy's picture

Earthsky.org, 10/18/13, Deborah Bryd

Penumbral lunar eclipse on April 25, 2013

In a penumbral lunar eclipse, only the more diffuse outer shadow of Earth falls on the moon’s face. This third kind of lunar eclipse is much more subtle, and much more difficult to observe, than either a total or partial eclipse of the moon. There is never a dark bite taken out of the moon, as in a partial eclipse. The eclipse never progresses to reach the dramatic minutes of totality. At best, at mid-eclipse, very observant people will notice a dark shading on the moon’s face. Others will look and notice nothing at all.

Sea cucumber extract kills 95 percent of breast cancer cells and shrinks lung tumors

Silver's picture

By: Thewatcher, 10/18/2013

A new study has shown that sea cucumber extract kills up to 95 percent of breast cancer cells, 90 percent of melanoma cells, 95 percent of liver cancer cells and 88 percent of lung cancer cells in vitro. The extract also stimulates the immune system against cancer and impedes key processes required for metastasis. While the science behind this is very new to Western medicine, the sea cucumber has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries.

In previous studies, extracts of sea cucumber have demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against pancreatic, lung, prostate, colon, breast, skin and liver cancer cells as well as leukemia and gioblastoma. Researchers have identified a key compound responsible for sea cucumber's anti-cancer properties: a triterpenoid known as frondoside A.

Heavenletter #4711 ~ Light of Heart

Silver's picture

By: Heavenletters.org, 10/18/2013

God said:

Be light of heart. What else makes sense? Soberness has its merits, yet lightness of heart blesses you. Seriousness does not so much. It would seem that anyone can be serious about all the twists and turns of life, and, yet, how many of My children can go on about their merry way when they have seemingly struck out?

Seriousness holds on tight to life. Lightness does not altogether let go of it perhaps, yet lightness says:

The Oracle Report for Friday, October 18, 2013 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

By: Oraclereport.com, 10/18/2013

Full Moon: illumination, realization, shadows

Moon: Aries

The Snowy Owl is pictured to represent the stance advised today: stone cold still.  A frosty energy accompanies the Full Moon/Penumbral Lunar Eclipse today.  It holds the power to freeze us in our tracks.  But if we are already stone cold still, the frostiness will just move around us.

A penumbral lunar eclipse is when part of Earth's shadow falls over the Moon.  This type of eclipse only dims the Moon.  The eclipse will be most visible over clear European, African, and the Middle Eastern skies, with a slight chance for sighting on the East Coast of the US.  Peak visibility is listed at 7:50 pm ET.

onions1 263x164 4+ Reasons Onions may be the Next Big Superfood

The term superfood is thrown around loosely, but it always points to the same thing: an incredibly healthful, natural food that can boost your health in numerous ways. Green tea, berries, and turmeric are just a few that could be considered superfoods, but rarely do we think of onions when we are talking about these dietary golden-children. Still, the health benefits of onions are what make this savory delight a potent health-booster.

Most of the benefits of onions come from something called quercetin. Quercetin is a powerful flavonoid, or type of antioxidant, that provides numerous benefits throughout the body by protecting cells from free radical damage. Onions are one of the top dietary sources of this powerful compound.

It is Time to Be Love

A God & Gabriel Message Channeled by Suzanne Spooner of TAUK October 17, 2013

God & Gabriel

[Hello God & Gabriel!] Hi Suzy. Can we discuss the possibilities that are in Earth’s reality right now? [Absolutely!]

First, the light of God, of Higher Realms, is increasing in a dramatic way. You know this first hand and as a concept that light workers are feeling.

Many see chaos. Many others see peace and detachment from chaos.

In this reality you will be in the midst of great love and great pain. We do not wish to be fearful but to be open and truthful. Keep in your imagination, a vision of love and peace. Be the calm and the love. Give others your calm by being the calm and being loving. Imagine well now. It is time to be love.

Second, live life in awe of the transition you are witnessing now. This is exactly why you and so many others requested to be on Earth at this historical time. As you witness discomfort and confusion, allow the bright light of Divine energy to enter your body.

The New Reefer Madness: Drug War Crusaders Blame Pot Growers for Dead Animals -- But the Drug War's to Blame

Silver's picture

East Bay Express, By: David Downs, 10/15/2013

The photo looks like something out of a horror film. A long, thin animal lays dissected on a white table. Metal tools pull the animal's skin back to reveal its jellied, maroon-colored insides — all soupy, slick, and lumpy. It's the remains of a Pacific Fisher, an eight-pound member of the weasel family that's now hovering near extinction, thanks in part to illegal pot farming in the vast forests of California.

Fishers eat forest mice, and forest mice nibble the green stalks of still-maturing cannabis plants. So illicit growers who toil deep inside California's forests spread powerful rodenticides — rat poison — on the ground near their marijuana crops. The mice eat the poisonous anti-coagulants, get sick, and then the fishers eat the mice. Soon after, the furry forest weasels are melting from the inside out.

Kaua'i city council slaps down Monsanto with unprecedented new restrictions on GMOs and toxic pesticides

Silver's picture

Naturalnews, By: Mike Adams, 10/17/2013

(NaturalNews) A milestone has just been achieved on the island in Kaua'i, where the city council passed measure 2491 which places unprecedented new restrictions on toxic agricultural chemicals frequently used in conjunction with GMOs. Few people realize that Kaua'i is ground zero for chemical experimentation in agriculture. The island hosts 15,000 acres of crop lands which are experimentally exploited by biotech companies and chemical manufacturers. As a result, Hawaiians who live on Kaua'i are exposed to a toxic cocktail of synthetic chemicals on a routine basis.

The bill passed by a vote of 6 to 1, with councilman Mel Rapozo siding with the biotech industry and voting no. Hawaii Governor Abercrombie appears to be set against the bill and tried to block its passage. The biotech industry, as usual, has been busily engaged in false, defamatory, deceptive and even criminal actions in trying to block this city council measure. The industry, for example, routinely bribes scientists to publicly oppose bills restricting GMOs while falsely claiming they have no financial ties to the industry.

Why We Get Mad When Others Challenge What We Believe In

Silver's picture

Waking Times, By: Joe Martino

Thousands of years ago the earth was the center of the universe. Hundreds of years ago the earth was flat. Today, we know both of these things to be false given what we have discovered about our world and the solar system. However, when people first started bringing the idea forward that what people believed about the earth being flat or the center of the universe was false, they were met with extreme resistance and were considered to be crazy. Regardless of the fact that today we might laugh at these ideas because we know them to be false, back then it was so heavily believed and engrained into people’s minds. You could say there is a striking resemblance between what was happening during those times and what is happening now with those who are awakening to what is really going on here on earth.

Truth passes through three phases: First it is ridiculed. Second it is fiercely and violently opposed. Third, it becomes self-evident.
