Indigenous Nations Are at the Forefront of the Conflict With Transnational Corporate Power

On Monday, October 7, 2013, indigenous nations and their allies held 70 actions throughout the world proclaiming their sovereignty. The call to action was issued by Idle No more and Defenders of the Land to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the British Royal Proclamation of 1763, which was the first document in which an imperial nation recognized indigenous sovereignty and their right to self-determination. As we wrote last week, treaties with First Nations are not being honored, and even the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples does not adequately recognize the sovereignty of indigenous peoples.

Let us begin this missive by saying that much has been set into motion these last few days, and much of this will in turn engender even further influxes that again will engender even more changes. So in some ways, we can say that these energetic emissions line up, nose to tail, in a never ending cycle of information that will take you all by storm. This will perhaps not be news to any of you, as you have already felt these waves slamming into you, but in a rather interesting manner, we hasten to add. For what you are experiencing now is happening at a very different level than before, and as such, you have been given a whole lot of new toys to play around with. We use this word, even if it may be construed as a rather flippant one, but trust is when we say that we are very serious about this, but we do it in order to remind you that the more you try to let go of the notion of seriousness and toil, the more you will be able to go with the flow and have fun with what you are about to step into.

SYDNEY -- SYDNEY (AP) — A powerful earthquake rocked the South Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea on Wednesday, officials said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake measured magnitude 7.1 and was located 65 kilometers (40 miles) west-southwest of Panguna in Papua New Guinea. It struck at 8:31 p.m. (1031 GMT) at a depth of 58 kilometers (36 miles), it said.
