Cabinet ministers and members of the national security council were told nothing about the existence and scale of the vast data-gathering programmes run by British and American intelligence agencies, a former member of the government has revealed.
At least for an afternoon, the chess players were back at the usual spot they've occupied for years along downtown San Francisco's busy Market Street.
But instead of hustling a dollar here and a dollar there with deft openings and clever traps, the mostly homeless players and their supporters were playing Sunday in defiance of a recent police crackdown and ban on the public games. And they were backed by a brass band and several homeless advocates who helped organize the three-hour "chess-in" under bright, blue skies on a hot San Francisco afternoon.

Somewhere a few centuries back, we developed the fragmented, Newtonian worldview that haunts us still. Our very perception shifted, as we fragmented ourselves, specialized ourselves, as we created a binary world of black and white, of us and them, of either/or. Nature and spirit a distant other. There was security in this view. A false sense of security.

As several thousand demonstrators rallied around them, eight members of the House of Representatives were arrested on Tuesday outside the Capitol in a protest to push Congress to pass broad immigration legislation that includes a path to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally.
The representatives arrested were Joseph Crowley and Charles B. Rangel of New York, Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Al Green of Texas, Luis V. Gutierrez and Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Raul M. Grijalva of Arizona and John Lewis of Georgia. More than 150 other protesters, many from labor unions and immigrant organizations, were also arrested after they sat down and linked arms in the same street.
This is a call to everybody out there who’ll be lead to this, in one of the various places it’ll inevitably be posted. This is a call to everyone who’s been talking about and advocating the idea of widespread unity for years and decades.
We all have our unique philosophy in regards to the future we’re heading into, but one factor remains to be recognized by us all: the necessity to build upon the simple talking and advocating we’ve done up to this point. I can say from experience that it feels great to talk about coming together, but it’ll feel much better to actually see it come about.
We could have a potentially long road ahead of us helping the populace unite and wipe away prejudice, discrimination and separation of any kind.
The enforced belief that we’re different from one another has only continued to damage our planet and our relationship with each other as a collective, and it’s time for us to see beyond the illusion and help as many others become aware as possible.
The planetary elite have employed the old strategy of “divide and conquer” quite successfully, but they’ve only been able to do so because we perceived and fed separation and everything that’s come with it in the first place.
