Eyewitness states: Observing the sky with the green filter of it panoramic camera, the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit came across a surprise: a streak across the sky.

 

The streak, seen in the middle of this mosaic of images taken by the navigation and panoramic cameras, was probably the brightest object in the sky at the time.

The source of this "electron storm" is a 600 km/s stream of solar wind buffeting Earth's magnetic field. Over the weekend, sky watchers in northern Europe and Canada spotted electric-blue tendrils of light reaching out of the western sky at sunset. This signals the beginning of the 2013 season for noctilucent clouds (NLCs). Photographer Silvar Mehik sends this picture from the island of Saaremaa in Estonia:

 

 

NLCs are Earth's highest clouds. In the upper atmosphere, 80+ km high, tiny ice crystals nucleate around meteoroids and other aerosols. When the crystals catch the rays of the setting sun, they glow electric blue. For reasons that are not fully understood, these highest and coldest of clouds form during the warmest months on the ground--late spring and summer.

Did you see the three planets after sunset last night? Jupiter, Venus and Mercury formed a near-perfect equilateral triangle in the western twilight sky. Tonight – May 27, 2013 – the triangle is not so equal-sided, but you can still witness the planetary trio that pops out over the western horizon about 45 to 75 minutes after sunset. Don’t miss these three planets! You’ll be looking over the sunset point on the horizon at evening dusk. Be sure to find an unobstructed horizon in the direction of sunset, and if you have them, bring along binoculars to enhance the view of the three planets.

New, in-depth research on glacier mass losses and their contribution to the rising sea level between 2003 and 2009 shows that the world's mountain glaciers have contributed just as much melt water to rising sea level as the the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.

Much of Alaska glacier ice is located near the coast, making it more susceptible to climate fluctuations, according to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

A letter from Carl Jung to an editor at the New Republic newspaper in Washington D.C. about UFOs has recently gone up for auction at the Swann Auction Galleries. The letter, dated December 12, 1957, appears to be in response to a request to write an article about UFOs and Jung’s upcoming book on the topic.

Jung demonstrated a great interest in UFOs in his career, primarily the psychological aspects of the modern mythology, but as he expresses in the letter, to his chagrin, “one almost must regret that the Ufos seem to be real after all.”

Star Trek star says NASA knows about aliens

Some of the cast and crew of the new Star Trek movie, Star Trek Into Darkness, got a chance to speak to some astronauts via Google+ Hangout. The movie’s producer and director, J.J. Abrams started off the questioning asking if they had seen anything strange that makes them believe in aliens. Although the astronauts said they hadn’t, one of the stars of the movie, Alice Eve, says she was not convinced.

The Star Trek cast and crew included writer/producer Damon Lindelof and stars Chris Pine, John Cho, and Alice Eve. They talked to astronauts Michael Fincke and Kjell Lindgren at the Johnson Space Center, and Chris Cassidy aboard the International Space Station.

Abrams was not able to participate in the live event, but he started off the questions with a video that was recorded earlier. He asked:
