Finding that place of peace inside you

For over a year now we have been busy building our bridge to the new world. It has been a monumental task but we have stuck with it and hammered away with great determination. It is finished now and the only thing left for us to do is cross over it. Do we have the courage to leave the old world behind and put all of our trust into the new world? Do we dare cross over into forbidden territory and claim it for our own? Have we finally finished listening to the dark ones fearful diatribes and instead prefer to listen to the beautiful music drifting over from the other side? Are we done with the ‘buts’ of why we cannot move forward? Are we done with the thousands of excuses of why we are unable to cross over? Are we willing at long last to shake off the fears constantly being heaped upon us and say no more, I’m crossing over? Well I have news for you, we are already in the new world! We have already crossed that bridge.

Los Angeles, California recorded its coldest temperature in 22 years on Sunday, and record daily lows fell across large portions of the Western U.S. over the weekend. But meanwhile, much of the Eastern U.S. basked in record-breaking warmth, with temperatures reaching the upper 60s in New York. What's going on? Well, the jet stream--the upper level river of strong winds that marks the boundary between cold, Arctic air to the north and warm, subtropical air to the south--has worked itself into a very extreme configuration.

The jet is diving far to the south over the Western U.S., creating a U-shaped trough of low pressure that allows cold air to spill southwards out of Canada. The 34°F reading on Sunday morning in Los Angeles was the coldest temperature there since December 23, 1990. (The lowest temperature ever recorded in downtown Los Angeles was 28°F, most recently on January 4, 1949.) The -20°F observed at Grand Canyon, Arizona on Sunday morning tied for the coldest temperature measured there in 37 years of record keeping.

DES MOINES — For farmers like Earl Williams, last year couldn’t have started out better, or ended much worse — as a warm, sunny spring that let him plant early gave way to record heat and drought that devastated his corn.

Williams ended up with about two-thirds of the crop he expected, and a U.S. Department of Agriculture report released Friday showed most corn farmers didn’t fare much better. The final report on the 2012 growing season showed farmers harvested 10.78 billion bushels of corn, less than three-fourths of what the agency predicted last spring.
