Redefining Health ~ Throw Away Your Scale

Health is not a numerical concept and cannot be defined using statistics. Human beings, however, tend to want to quantify well-being into easily understandable figures. We feel compelled to ascribe numbers to every aspect of wellness, from the qualities of our food to our fitness levels to the physical space we occupy. As a consequence of social pressures, we turn our attention away from health and focus instead on the most contentious of these figures—weight—checking our scales to see how we measure up to our peers and role models. Yet each of us is equipped to gauge our relative healthfulness without any equipment whatsoever. When we have achieved a state of wellness, we feel buoyant and energetic. Some of us are naturally slim, while others will always be curvy. No matter what our weight, we can use the cues we receive from our physical and mental selves to judge how healthy we really are.

state of letting go

Spending time in nature is healing energy for the mind, body and soul. The idea with Shinrin-yoku, a term coined by the government in 1982 but inspired by ancient Shinto and Buddhist practices, is to let nature enter your body through all five senses, and feel at one with the forest. It is about being mindful of your surroundings and the experience. It’s not about extreme outdoor sports or being alone in the wilderness, but about allowing your body and psyche to unwind in the peace of the woods, similar to natural aromatherapy. Ancient wisdom and tribes, who live in harmony with nature, have advocated this for long, and only in recent years there have been studies carried out to prove the health benefits of forest bathing.

Hello friends and welcome to February! My feeling about this month is that it will have a slower pace than January and be more about rest and integration (we could use it!) Mercury is retrograde the *entire month* as well. Before you have a mini freak-out about that, I don't see it as a negative thing. For me personally I am preparing for a big house move in March and am using February to go through things, recycle and restructure, which is a perfect Mercury Retrograde thing to do. You don't have to be physically moving to do that either. Just be mindful that when your internet connection is moving at a snail's pace or your phone is dropping off calls, that could be the culprit. Mercury Rx is always a great exercise in patience and frankly my Aries moon doesn't like it, although I know it's good for me.  The cosmic sky isn't exactly quiet this month astrologically, but I feel the overarching vibe IS. The planetary movements this month also support introspection, cleansing and clearing.

I was re-reading the book The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz yet again and if only everyone were following the Four Agreements, how much better the world would be! I am continually astounded by the lies that are being flung around throughout the world right now and many from the highest positions in the country. Very disturbing to think our children are being taught the skills of dishonesty by our Government. It is invasive into our lives and so it is imperative we counteract that negative energy by living our own lives with integrity and love. The children need more than ever to have role models to emulate and so parents are needed to live up to their highest integrity and be there for them. We need to keep fighting against the immorality going on by raising our personal bars higher and higher in becoming the best that we can be! It is slowly working and we should stay focused on that fact to urge us onward.
