(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has told those in Religious Life to “wake up the world”, according to an article appearing in La Civiltà Cattolica, the Rome-based Jesuit weekly.
Editor Antonio Spadaro, SJ, has written an article recounting the private meeting last November between Pope Francis and the Union of Superiors General of religious men at the end of their 82nd General Assembly.

“Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing things, of acting, of living! It is possible to live differently in this world,” Pope Francis said.
“We are speaking of an eschatological outlook, of the values of the Kingdom incarnated here, on this earth. It is a question of leaving everything to follow the Lord. No, I do not want to say “radical.” Evangelical radicalness is not only for religious: it is demanded of all. But religious follow the Lord in a special was, in a prophetic way. It is this witness that I expect of you. Religious should be men and women who are able to wake the world up.”

Living amidst nature can be such a beautiful learning experience, one of the lessons we learned while we were living in the countryside was the importance of water. During summer, temperatures would soar up to 42 degrees Celsius (107 Fahrenheit) inside the house and it was even more outside.

But the most gruesome challenge was the lack of water; we were living on rain water that collected in the ground. By summer the water well would run dry, changing the entire landscape – trees would loose their leaves or they look all shriveled up, the only time we would hear a bird would be early in the morning or at the time of sunset.

Happy New Year! Welcome to a year filled with opportunity, if only you can embrace the perfection of each moment. Of course allow yourselves to dream, to take action, and to move towards your goals. However, when things do not look exactly as you wish them to be, don’t despair, fall into frustration, or give up on your dreams! Instead, pray. “OK Dear God. I trust you. You know the deepest wishes in my heart because you placed them there. You want more for me than I could ever want for myself. I will trust that right now, there is perfection in my life.”

Then dear ones, act as if everything is perfect even though you cannot see how. Believe that your life is moving perfectly towards your dreams. Have faith! The detour you are forced to take could save your life. The rest you are forced to take could be giving you much needed time to think. The frustration with not having what you want right now, might just be the delay God needs to help you clarify exactly what you DO want. Everything, and we repeat, everything has purpose. Everything has value. Everything is guiding you back along the rivers of grace into the Ocean of God’s love.

Can you surrender to this year, moment by moment? Can you be kind and gentle with yourselves? Can you refuse to beat yourselves up and instead simply learn from the outcomes of your choices? Can you trust in God’s love for you?

Federal authorities said today there has been no “unusual flight activity” in California despite a flurry of reports by civilians in several cities who believe they saw strange lights in the sky on New Years morning.

More witnesses across California reported similar sightings around the same time, including from Sacramento and Auburn.
