Volunteers step in for flood victims

At such times, it's important to highlight when a community can come together to help. Dave Wilkinson has worked coordinating the Community Rebuild program, led by the Salvation Army and other church groups and focused on getting repairs done. He says the task is big not just here in Bundaberg but right throughout the Burnett catchment. The first job has been identifying people who need assistance most - those who are uninsured and don't have the capability to get back into their homes. So far, 40 of the 60 people on the list have been rebuilt under the program, which recruits volunteers from all over Australia.

A collection of ingredients came together to produce a destructive, deadly flash flood event in northern Colorado, including Boulder and parts of the Denver metro areas in mid-September, 2013

From the afternoon of September 9 through midday on September 13, 14.62 inches of rain had fallen in Boulder, Colo. This included an incredible 9.08 inches of rain on September 12, alone!

According to the Western Regional Climate Center, the previous all-time record rainfall for any calendar day in Boulder was a 4.80 inch deluge on July 31, 1919., in records dating to 1893. September 12th's total almost doubled the previous record wet day.

(CNN) -- Catastrophic flooding has prompted the evacuation of thousands upon thousands of people in Russia's Far East, a government ministry said Sunday, spurring hasty efforts to set up housing for the displaced.

Russia's emergency ministry said Sunday that 18,000 people had been affected in three regions north of China not far from the Sea of Okhotsk. RIA Novosti, a state-run news agency, identified the affected regions as the Amur region, Khabarovsk Territory and the Jewish Autonomous Region.

Flooding In the Phillipines Forces Financial Markets to Close

The flooding was so bad in and around Manila that the financial markets for the country were shut down on Monday. Government offices, schools, universities and many businesses were also forced to close.

As of Monday afternoon, local time, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported three deaths from the heavy rainfall. Several people have been reported missing while at least 11 have been hospitalized with various injuries.

Floods hit northeast India, washing away over 300 villages

NEW DELHI, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Monsoon floods have now hit the northeastern Indian state of Assam, washing away more than 300 villages, just days after the natural calamity devastated the northern state of Uttarakhand, killing thousands, a senior government official said Thursday.

"Heavy rains have triggered flash floods which swept away 300 villages across eight districts of the state, located on the banks of overflowing Brahmaputra river, displacing thousands and destroying crops. There have been no reports of any casualty yet," he said.

Heat Wave Persists in West as Flooding Threatens East

Temperatures in the U.S. West will reach as much as 20 degrees above normal today while heavy rain threatens the East Coast, the National Weather Service said.

The high may be 111 Fahrenheit (44 Celsius) in Bakersfield, California, and 103 in Sacramento as another day of baking heat takes hold in the West, the agency said.

Indian officials described the devastation of the Uttarakhand as "unprecedented in 1,000 years" and said it would need at least five years for the flood-affected areas to recover.

Officials said more than 33,000 pilgrims had been rescued in the last few days, but more than 50,000 people were still stranded.

Several killed or missing in Germany, Czech Republic and Austria after torrential rain causes flooding and mudslides.

Authorities in parts of Europe issued disaster warnings and scrambled to reinforce flood defences as rivers swelled by days of heavy rain threatened to burst their banks.

Several people have died or are missing in the floods in Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland since the rains began on Thursday.
