Innisfail and South Johnstone gained over 250mm in a two day deluge, nearing May rain records. Rain has been dumping along the Queensland North Tropical Coast for the past two days. Innisfail gained 116mm to 9am yesterday, its heaviest May rain in 17 years. This morning it surpassed that total with a whopping 152mm to 9am, providing the wettest recorded pair of May days since 1912.

Nearby, South Johnstone has endured wet season style rainfall with 256mm in the past two days, its wettest two-day total in 26 years. Cairns has been picking up some much needed rainfall with its heaviest rain since January, gaining 72mm during the past two days. This month is the first since July to see above average rainfall, including a well below average wet season.

Western Australia's State Emergency Service has received about 110 calls for help from Perth residents, as thunderstorms and strong winds move across the state's south-west.

The Weather Bureau has issued a severe weather warning for a deep low that is expected to affect the region over the next 24 hours.

Western Australia has been lashed by heavy rain and damaging winds overnight, with more wild weather on the way. Many places saw their heaviest rain in almost a decade as a line of  rain and storms crossed the state's west overnight. Significant rain was widespread, extending from the South West Land division north to southern parts of the Pilbara.

Acton Park and Busselton in the southwest of the state both saw their heaviest rain since 2005, recording 86mm and 57mm respectively to 9am this morning. Aston Downs, also in the South West, picked up the heaviest official figure. Their 101mm was the heaviest rain in at least nine years. Learmonth in the southern Pilbara collected 34mm, its heaviest May fall in eight years.

The weather bureau is predicting the record for the hottest start to a year in Alice Springs will be broken this week.

Climatologist Joel Lisonbee says the average temperature is only 0.1 of a degree below the record of 35.6.

He says it has been a record breaking period for central Australia

Murrumbidgee Irrigation has finally agreed to let Griffith City Council and the SES use the East Mirrool Regulator to ease future flooding. Yenda residents blame a metre of soil at the site for exacerbating floods in March 2012 and some residents are yet to return to their homes.

Chief executive Raveen Jaduram says the abandoned structure will be be fully decommissioned at the end of the irrigation season. Mr Jaduram says the site could be made operational if Griffith City Council requests it for flood management as it works on its flood study.
