U.S. regulators were so suspicious of the circumstances surrounding Gilead Sciences Inc. (GILD)’s Nov. 21 announcement it was buying Pharmasset Inc. for $11 billion that they opened an insider-trading investigation that day.

Swiss bankers travelling to European countries could risk arrest (Keystone)

Swiss bankers whose names were delivered to the United States in April as part of the crackdown on US tax evaders face the risk of arrest while travelling in some European countries, not just on US soil.

Extradition treaties between the US and countries including France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Britain make it possible for the US to take legal steps via Interpol against bankers suspected of helping US citizens evade taxes, Denise Chervet, central secretary of the Swiss Bank Employees Association told the Swiss News Agency.

By Al Nour Ahmad al Nour

August 7, 2012

The security situation has deteriorated in many areas of the Darfur province, while the pace of killings and reprisals is threatening to spiral out of control. A UN official told Al-Hayat yesterday [August 6] that Khartoum has witnessed extensive violence over the past few weeks, resulting in dozens of civilian deaths. He added that “the increasing rate of violence is a growing concern,” given that 20 civilians are killed every day in various parts of Darfur. This is the same rate that was witnessed at the height of confrontations between government troops and rebels in Darfur in 2004.

inflammation
(NaturalNews) Persistent, systemic inflammation is at the root of practically all known chronic health conditions, including everything from rheumatoid arthritis and high cholesterol to dementia and cancer. These conditions are not necessarily inevitable, and neither is chronic inflammation, but you have to know what lifestyle and dietary steps to take in order to avoid them, many of which are fairly simple and straightforward.

There are literally hundreds of illnesses caused by chronic inflammation that modern medicine has classified as unique and unrelated, when in fact they are all products of the same underlying imbalances inside the body. When the root causes of these imbalances are properly addressed, in other words, chronic illness in general stands a far less chance of taking hold than if left to run its natural course.

Jamie Kirchick offers a vigorous defense of Germany's hard-line against Scientology. Along the way, Kirchick reminds us how wacky it was of the IRS to reverse years of precedent and grant Scientology recognition as a church. Whatever else it is, Scientology is a profit-seeking enterprise, a fact not altered because its profits derive from telling fabulous fictions.

BRUSSELS - Taxes in Greece continue to slip through state scrutiny as some corporations, wealthy Greek-ship owning families, and the Greek Orthodox Church are either exempt or use loopholes to hide millions of euros.

In the first five months of 2012, the Greek ministry of finance registered a €300 million shortfall in collected taxes. The shortfall, notes the ministry, is primarily due to corporations having not submitted their taxes on time.
