90-year-old Florida man arrested for feeding the homeless

Who's the government serving?

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL (WPLG/CNN) – It did not take long for City of Fort Lauderdale to make good on the promise to criminally charge those who violate a new ordinance that effectively outlaws groups from feeding the homeless in public.

On Sunday, the city charged three people, including two ministers and a 90-year-old homeless advocate, and they could face up to 60-days in jail for their so-called crime.

“I fully believe that I am my brother’s keeper. Love they neighbor as thy self,” explained Arnold Abbott.

90-year-old Abbott prepares hundreds of meals each week for the homeless in the kitchen of the Sanctuary Church.

Casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson is behind 85 percent of Florida’s anti-pot campaign

Floridians will decide whether to legalize marijuana for medical use in their state next week and, whatever the outcome, two men will deserve most of the credit (or blame) for bankrolling the fight.

The single largest contributor on either side of the fight over Amendment 2, which grants patients with “debilitating diseases” access to medical marijuana, is billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who, new campaign finance filings show, added $1 million to the $4 million he’s already spent in support of the campaign to defeat the measure. Adelson, the chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands and America’s 12th richest person, is responsible for 85 percent of the $5.8 million raised by Drug Free Florida, the organization leading the charge against the measure and headed by former Reagan drug czar Carlton Turner. For Adelson, that amount of spending is roughly equivalent to a person worth $1 million writing a $157 campaign contribution check.

Argentine President Warns the U.S. Might Try To Kill Her, Now She's In The Hospital With A Mysterious Illness

will's picture

About a month ago, U.S. military intelligence warned that ISIS might try to target Argentine President Cristina Fernandez. The Argentine President, however, wasn't buying it and released the following statement:

"Please, listen, if something happens to me, and I say this very seriously, if something happens to me do not look to the Middle East. Look to the North [U.S.]... because after seeing the things that they're diplomatic representatives are doing, after hearing these declarations that honestly seem like exercises in cyniscm, after seeing the things I've seen in the United Nations, it seems they'd want us to believe an entire story that ISIS is coming for me to kill me..."

Well it was just released yesterday that she's now in the hospital with an "infectious fever" though no other specifics have been released. Who would want her dead? U.S. bankers for one, whom her country is currently fighting a legal battle with to the tune of $1.3 billion. No end to their greed...

3 Bizarre Occult Secrets of the Reagan Presidency

will's picture

Ronald Reagan

The recent passing of Reagan astrologer Joan Quigley is a reminder that Ronald and Nancy Reagan were secretly super weird New Agers. Here’s three occult secrets that have come out from Reagan’s time in office.

Reagan astrologer Joan Quigley passed away last week in San Francisco, California at the age of 87.

Nancy Reagan regularly sought Miss Quigley for consultation on matters extending well beyond the president’s schedule into diplomacy and Cold War politics, and Salon ran a piece by Mitch Horowitz back in January that detailed Ronald Reagan’s personal interest in the writings of famed occult teacher Manly P. Hall.

What Happened When Monkeys Were Taught To Use Money?

will's picture

It's been said that money is the root of all evil, and while I don't believe that, I sure don't think it's a force for good either. It's a huge part of a system that takes power from vast majority of people and gives it to the very few. It tricks people into putting wealth outside of themselves, and to chase after money instead of searching for the vast riches that lie within. Is this human nature, or does money corrupt? To help answer this question, we ask another, what would happen if monkeys were taught to use money?

...in a clean and spacious laboratory at Yale-New Haven Hospital, seven capuchin monkeys have been taught to use money, and a comparison of capuchin behavior and human behavior will either surprise you very much or not at all, depending on your view of humans...

When taught to use money, a group of capuchin monkeys responded quite rationally to simple incentives; responded irrationally to risky gambles; failed to save; stole when they could; used money for food and, on occasion, sex. In other words, they behaved a good bit like the creature that most of Chen's more traditional colleagues study: Homo sapiens.

Yes, There Are Paid Government Trolls On Social Media, Blogs, Forums And Websites

will's picture

A word of caution, fighting and witch-hunts over who's a government shill can poison online communities even when no government agents are actually present. Be careful that you're not doing their job for them.

Do you want solid proof that paid government shills are targeting websites, blogs, forums and social media accounts? For years, many have suspected that government trolls have been systematically causing havoc all over the Internet, but proving it has been difficult.

But now thanks to documents leaked by Edward Snowden and revealed by Glenn Greenwald, we finally have hard evidence that western governments have been doing this.

As you will see below, a UK intelligence outfit known as the Government Communications Headquarters, through a previously secret unit known as the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group, has been systematically attempting “to control, infiltrate, manipulate, and warp online discourse”.

Why Does the U.S. Senate Need a Petition Drive to Hold Hearings on the Secret Goldman Sachs’ Tapes?

will's picture

It appears that Senators Elizabeth Warren and Sherrod Brown believe they may have a battle on their hands getting their colleagues on the Senate Banking Committee to agree to hold hearings on the now notorious tape recordings secretly made by former New York Fed bank examiner, Carmen Segarra, showing a cozy relationship between the regulator and Goldman Sachs.

Petitions have sprung up all over the internet, with more than 129,000 signatures as of this morning, demanding that Congress hold hearings to investigate whether the Federal Reserve System, and specifically the New York Fed, function as merely sycophantic fronts for Wall Street or if they serve any meaningful regulatory role.

The Top Five Special Interest Groups Lobbying To Keep Marijuana Illegal

will's picture

More evidence that keeping marijuana illegal has little to do with keeping people safe or healthy. It turns out the top five groups lobbying to prevent legalization happen to be the groups that profit the most from it being illegal. They are:

  • Police Unions
  • Private Prisons Corporations

How marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington is making the world a better place

will's picture

Many countries are now taking a close look at what's happening in the states to learn lessons that can be applied to their own situations. And so far, the news coming out of Colorado and Washington is overwhelmingly positive: dire consequences predicted by reform opponents have failed to materialize. If anything, societal and economic indicators are moving in a positive direction post-legalization. Colorado marijuana tax revenues for fiscal year 2014-2015 are on track to surpass projections.

Countries, particularly in Latin America, are starting to apply these lessons in order to craft smarter policies that reduce violence and other societal harms brought about by the drug war. Uruguay, for instance, has moved toward full national legalization of marijuana, with an eye toward reducing the thriving black market there. Mexico's president has given signs he's open to changes in that country's marijuana laws to help combat cartel violence. The Organization of American States recently issued a statement in favor of dealing with drug use as a public health issue, rather than a criminal justice one.

Regardless the eventual direction of marijuana legalization in the U.S., steps toward reform here are already prompting other countries to seek out more pragmatic solutions to their drug problems. In short, they're making the world a better place.
