US accuses Israel of ‘alarming, even terrifying’ levels of spying

will's picture

I kind wonder about the timing of these revelations, especially in the wake of Snowden's disclosures about groups like Five Eyes and their obscene spying programs such as XKeyscore.

Israel has been trying to steal secrets from the US, its principal protector and benefactor, but also occasional rival, ever since the inception of the Jewish state in 1948, and even before. But according to the latest issue of Newsweek, quoting Obama administration officials, these activities have “crossed red lines” rarely encountered in the past.

In the words of one Congressional aide, with access to classified briefings in January on the subject, Israel’s behaviour was “very sobering…?alarming…?even terrifying”. Israel, it would appear, is after everything it can lay its hands on: not just diplomatic and policy documents, but industrial and military technology. The means include Israeli trade missions to the US, joint ventures between Israeli and American companies and, presumably, spying by Israeli intelligence agencies.

Open Internet backers stage ‘Occupy FCC’

will's picture

Internet libertarians calling for the equal treatment of all Internet data have camped out in front of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in Washington, D.C., saying they won’t quit their Occupy-style protest until the regulator stands up for Net neutrality.

About 15 people stood outside the FCC’s headquarters on Wednesday afternoon in a protest organized by the two groups, Fight for the Future and Popular Resistance. Five of the demonstrators said they were determined to set up camp overnight and stick around until May 15, when the commission is set to unveil proposed new Net neutrality rules — or perhaps longer, if the new rules don’t meet their expectations.

Margaret Flowers of Popular Resistance says members of the protest — officially called “Camp Out to Save Net Neutrality” or “People’s Firewall FCC Camp” and unofficially as “Occupy FCC” — are in it for the long haul, bringing sleeping bags and signs and engaging in chants, such as “Hey, hey, FCC, the Internet must be free” and “FCC, drop the barrier, make the Internet a common carrier.”

The FCC’s new net neutrality proposal is already ruining the Internet

will's picture

It may seem melodramatic to say that the future of the Internet in the United States was put in jeopardy earlier this year when a U.S. Appeals court killed net neutrality. Unfortunately, it is not melodramatic at all.

Net neutrality rules had been put in place to ensure that Internet service providers and other related entities treat all data as equal without giving preferential treatment to large companies that might otherwise be able to pay extra for faster connections.

Since January when the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia struck down net neutrality laws that had been put in place in 2010, we have already seen things begin to change for the worse.

A brief glimmer of hope emerged last month when the FCC announced that it would try to bring net neutrality back from the dead, but hope quickly turned into outrage when people realized that the FCC’s new net neutrality proposal appears to be designed specifically to ensure that the Internet is not neutral.

Operation Monsanto Stock Plunge: Big Monsanto Stock Dump Friday, May 9th

will's picture

(NaturalSociety) Millions will be encouraged to dump Monsanto stock this coming Friday, May 9th, to give a clear message to the biotech industry that we don’t support them at all. With rallies planned across the country, as well as picketing to bring attention to companies like Fidelity that owsn huge amount of Monsanto stock, activists everywhere will bring the poisoning, monopolizing Monsanto, and its supporters to their knees.

Monsanto completely dominates the world seed market – for now. More than 282 million acres are currently planted with Monsanto’s vile GMO soy and corn. Over 40% of US croplands are planted with this atrocious non-food, garbage. It’s simply time to cut off Monsanto’s allowance.

Non-Conformity & Creativity Now Listed As A Mental Illness By Psychiatrists - Collective Evolution

will's picture

conformIt’s no secret that when society, as a whole starts thinking outside the box, or starts to question what’s really happening on the planet it faces a fierce opposition. It’s also no secret that authority figures throughout history have ridiculed ideas that simply did not fit the frame. In our not so distant past, new ideas and understandings were harshly opposed by those in control. A great example is Galileo, who was convicted (and worked banned) from the public domain, and labelled as crazy. Scientists during this time were also sought after and killed. Have things really changed today? Is the pharmaceutical industry another means of condemning and altering those who think outside the box?

**For those who believe this title is misleading, I think it’s great to open ones mind to the possibility that many psychiatric labels are used to push drugs, and discourage free/alternative thought. I believe many are made up in order to do so. At the same time, I believe there are people who experience very real differences that we have yet to understand. The science behind many “mental illnesses” is also very weak. Again, we understand very little and have much to learn.

Ancient Tablet Discovered that Could Rewrite the History of Language

will's picture

You might think this would be bigger news, but like most things that threaten the mainstream version of history, it's been almost entirely ignored. Just goes to show how little we really know about the past, from Archaeology News Network:

Back in 1993, in a Neolithic lakeshore settlement that occupied an artificial island near the modern village of Dispilio on Lake Kastoria in the Kastoria Prefecture, professor George Hourmouziadis and his team unearthed the Dispilio Tablet (also known as the Dispilio Scripture or the Dispilio Disk), a wooden tablet bearing inscribed markings (charagmata) that has been carbon 14-dated to about 7300 BP (5260 BC).

In February 2004, during the announcement of the Tablet’s discovery to the world, Hourmouziadis claimed that the text with the markings could not be easily publicized because it would ultimately change the current historical background concerning the origins of writing and articulate speech depicted with letters instead of ideograms within the borders of the ancient Greek world and by extension, the broader European one.

According to the Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the markings suggested that the current theory proposing that the ancient Greeks received their alphabet from the ancient civilizations of the Middle East (Babylonians, Sumerians and Phoenicians etc) fails to close the historic gap of some 4,000 years. This gap translates into the following facts: while ancient eastern civilizations would use ideograms to express themselves, the ancient Greeks were using syllables in a similar manner like we use today.

Fast-food workers announce global protest, walkouts set for 33 countries

will's picture

Fast-food workers are planning a global strike for better pay and working conditions, with actions set to take place in 150 U.S. cities and 32 other countries in a bid to exert pressure on multinational companies.

Strikes are planned for May 15 across five continents in countries including Morocco, Japan, India, Belgium, Germany, Brazil, Argentina and New Zealand, where workers will stage a protest at the McDonald’s headquarters in Auckland, according to a statement by activist group Fast Food Forward. Other strikes will target Burger King, Wendy’s and KFC.

The actions were announced Wednesday in Manhattan, New York, at a meeting during which fast-food workers and union leaders detailed how they intended to expand a movement that began with a walkout in November 2012. On that occasion, some 200 workers went on strike in New York City, demanding a pay increase of $15 per hour and the right to unionize without retaliation.

Since then, thousands have followed, organizing protests in more than 100 cities across the U.S., where workers’ demand to earn a ‘living’ wage in an economy that increasingly relies on low-income jobs has become a national rallying cry.

“It’s amazing that our fight for $15 and a union has inspired workers around the world to come together,” said Ashley Cathey, a McDonald’s employee in Memphis, Tenn. “The highly-profitable fast-food industry needs to know we won’t stop fighting until our voices are heard,” she added.

will's picture

A 1500-year-old bible has been discovered in Turkey. Furthermore, the 1500-year-old bible states that Jesus Christ was not the son of God, but simply a prophet who passed on the word of God.

According to a report for The National Turk, the bible and alleged Gospel of Barnabas was seized from smugglers in the Mediterranean area in 2000 and held in a Turkish courthouse until safe transfer to the museum could be arranged. Authorities charged the thieves with “smuggling antiquities, illegal excavations and the possession of explosives,” they since been sent to trial, Turkish police testified in regards to the incredible age of the bible, claiming it could be as old as "2000 years."

If We Act Now, We Can Stop The FCC's Horrific Proposal to End Net Neutrality

will's picture

If we act NOW, we can ensure a free, open and equal Internet for the 21 st Century. On Wednesday, May 15 the FCC will vote on a proposal to end net neutrality and impose class-based Internet discrimination, but we have the power to stop them.

To ensure the Internet we want, we must take action today; and people need to plan to come to Washington, DC beginning next Wednesday to join in a series of escalating protests that will undermine the legitimacy of the FCC leadership and force them to pay attention to the public interest rather than the interests of mega-corporations.

Already more than a million people have written the FCC in favor of net neutrality and the Commissioners are receiving more than 100 calls per day from citizens. They know the public wants a free, open and equal Internet. Now we have to show them we will revolt if it is taken away from us.

The proposal by Obama appointee, Tom Wheeler , a long-time industry lobbyist and Internet profiteer, will put in place a pay-to-play Internet where the wealthiest will have superior service to the rest of us, where big corporations will have faster websites than independent sites and where free speech is stifled by money...
