AP, By: Mark Scolforo, 12/15/2013

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — At this rate, the Northeast will be tired of winter before winter even arrives. Another shot of wintry weather moved through Ohio and Pennsylvania on Saturday as it headed into New England, hampering travel by car and airplane and complicating shoppers' plans less than two weeks before Christmas. Nearly a foot of snow was reported in parts of central Pennsylvania late Saturday as the sprawling storm moved into New England, where the National Weather Service warned Maine could see near-blizzard conditions Sunday due to heavy snow and strong winds before the storm moves out.

Corporate Extortion: States Are Giving Billions to Corporations That Don’t Create Jobs

As the nation turns its attention to the latest federal budget deal where curtailed spending and cuts are the defining principal, a dozen blue and red state governors are in a bidding war recklessly offering to spend billions for tax breaks and other public-paid subsidies to lure the corporate giant Boeing to build its next-generation aircraft factory.

Beyond the schizophrenic spectre of congressional negotiators saying no to spending as governors are offering mountains of cash is a maddening reality: these taxpayer subsidies do not create the promised jobs or investments, a series of striking academic studies have found. All they do is boost bottom lines by cutting corporate costs.

A powerful icy storm system is sweeping across the US, resulting in temperatures dropping to -29C and lower as well as deaths, power cuts and massive travel disruption. Yesterday the winter storm began pushing up the country's densely-populated Eastern Seaboard, and forecasters say it will continue to drop freezing rain, sleet and snow on cities from West Virginia to Maine. A severe warning was issued by the Government’s National Weather Service (NWS) at the weekend, and officials say temperatures will remain low until late on Monday (local time) when the system exits to the northeast.

Silver's picture

By: weather.com, 12/09/2013

The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are waking up to a layer of snow and ice this morning from Winter Storm Dion, which will ground flights and make road travel dangerous for a second day. "Assume everything under your feet this morning is ice unless it’s a treated road or surface,” said The Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel, reporting from Leesburg, Va. "You have as much as a quarter of an inch or half an inch of ice on top of the 4 inches of snow. It's coating sidewalks, driveways, cars, trees. Power outages continue to increase (Monday) morning.”

Desert Gypsy's picture

The Watchers-8/30/13, Adonai

A meteor with estimated mass of over 50 kg exploded over Tennessee, USA, around 07:27 UTC on August 28, 2013 (02:27 local time). Head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, Bill Cook, said the fireball reached a peak magnitude of -13. It was brighter than a full moon, and casted shadows on the ground. This indicated that the meteor had a mass of over 50 kg (110 lbs) and was about 40 cm (16 inches) in diameter.

All 6 NASA's all sky cameras in the southeast picked up a very bright fireball that may have produced meteorites. The cameras were completely saturated, necessitating a manual solution.
