Mauna Loa: minor unrest and inflation reported at planet’s largest volcano

Magikalspirit's picture

theextinctionprotocol July 6,2012

July 6, 2013 – HAWAII – Very weak unrest in the form of inflation and seismic activity continues at the largest active volcano of our earth, which has not erupted since 1984. However, this activity is not strong enough to justify a raise of the alert level from green “normal” to yellow “unrest.” There is currently no sign that Mauna Loa will erupt any time soon. HVO reports in its monthly update: “Minor inflation of a shallow magma reservoir beneath Mauna Loa may be occurring. Seismicity rates were slightly elevated.
Deformation: Deformation of Mauna Loa continued to be dominated by southeasterly motion of the south flank. However, slow uplift also continues near the summit caldera (~1cm/yr at MLSP) suggesting that some inflation of the shallow magma reservoir complex beneath the summit area is occurring. –Volcano

Volcanoes Today, 2 Jul 2013: Momotombo

A seismic swarm has been occurring at the volcano during the past 24 hours, including a magnitude 3.0 earthquake yesterday. This could indicate a magmatic intrusion happening at depth, but so far, no unusual surface activity has been noted. On the other hand, Momotombo volcano is one of Nicaragua's most frequently active, with 10 recorded historic eruptions between 1524 and 1905, so new activity would not be a big surprise.

Massive earthquakes can cause volcanoes to sink

New York: Massive earthquakes can cause far-off volcanoes to sink by as much as 15 centimetres, according to new research.

The magnitude-9.0 earthquake that struck Japan in 2011 caused volcanoes as far as 200 km from the epicentre to sink up to 15 centimetres, researchers found.

Veniaminof volcano (Alaska Peninsula, USA) activity update

Volcanodiscovery-June 12,2013

ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) satellite image showing a steam plume emitting from the active intracaldera cone at Veniaminof Volcano on March 4, 2008 at 12:57 PM AKS (image processed by AVO/USGS, Image data courtesy of NASA/GSFC/METI/ERSDAC/JAROS, and U.S./Japan ASTER Science Team)

Seismic tremor continued to slowly but steadily increase yesterday, then dropped temporarily and has been increasing again today. AVO reports an intermittent, low-level steam plume issuing from the central cone within the caldera. No elevated surface temperature were visible in satellite images. No other activity was confirmed by AVO.

52: Indonesia’s Dieng volcano raised to third highest alert status

Desert Gypsy's picture

The Extinction Protocol- 3/29/13

VSI raised the alert level to the third highest level Siaga (3 out of 4) for Indonesia’s volatile Dieng volcano, because significant changes were observed at the crater lake. The most spectacular was the change of the lake water color to dark brown on 24 March. In addition, a significant increase in CO2 concentration within 500 m from the Timbang crater was measured, from 0.01% (by volume) in early March to 2.5% between 11 and 15 March. Also the emissions of the magmatic gas H2S increased. The now elevated gas concentrations are becoming a significant hazard (illustrated by a cat found suffocated by CO2). Therefore, it is strongly advised not to approach the Timbang crater within one kilometer to avoid the risk of suffocation, due to the high CO2 concentrations (note that CO2 is absolutely odorless and lethal when inhaled in larger quantities). –Volcano Discovery

Deep under the Pacific Ocean and along the Ring of Fire sits a volcano that suddenly came to life in March 2009.

The eruption captured by the images above occurred just miles off the coast of Tonga, a chain of islands north of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean. They sit on a fault line that is extremely active, and when a 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook the islands in 2009, residents thought nothing of it.

New Zealand’s White Island volcano stirs, sends out ash clouds

Desert Gypsy's picture

The Extinction Protocol- 2/24/2013,

February 24, 2013 – NEW ZEALAND  — White Island is stirring again but volcanologists say activity within the crater is only minor. GNS has monitoring cameras in place at the volcano which take photos of the crater every 15 minutes and scientists noticed an increased level of activity between 11.30am and 1.30pm today. Duty volcanologist Arthur Jolly said the ash was confined to within the crater and would not affect aviation in the area. He was unsure as to what the rest of the weekend had to hold. “In certain volcanic systems you can see an evolution in the pattern and we know from many volcanoes worldwide that some volcanoes follow a pattern that leads to an eruption,” Jolly said. “But in this case, this volcano doesn’t follow this kind of set script.” By the end of last month the hot crater lake on White Island completely dried up as explosive rocks, mud and gas were thrown into the air from the active volcano. The volcano has been spewing a steady stream of gas since activity heated up in December. It’s the most active the volcano has been since 2000. –Stuff
