AURORAS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY? Two minor CMEs that left the sun on Feb. 11th are expected to merge and hit Earth's magnetic field on Feb. 14th. The combined impact could spark geomagnetic storms and auroras around the Arctic Circle on Valentine's Day. Aurora alerts: text, voice

INCREASING CHANCE OF FLARES: Sunspot AR1974 is growing rapidly and poses an increasing chance of Earth-directed flares. Click to view 48 hours of developments:

During the past two days, the sunspot has sprouted dozens of new dark cores under an increasingly complex magnetic canopy. The region's unstable 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field harbors energy for strong explosions, prompting NOAA forecasters to boost the daily odds of M-flares to 45%, and X-flares to 10%. ROMANTIC AURORAS: The Moon will be full on Feb. 14th, and what could be more romantic than full moonlight on Valentine's Day? The answer is moonlit auroras:

"This is what we saw on Sunday, Feb 9th from the Churchill Northern Studies Centre on the shore of Hudson Bay in Manitoba," says photographer Alan Dyer. "With the bright waxing Moon, auroras now have to be even brighter than usual to show up in our sky.'

London's River Thames Breaches Banks as Wave of Storms Pound Europe

Silver's picture

By: Wunderground.com, 02/10/2014

Another intense Atlantic storm is impacting Europe, bringing strong winds and torrential rain for areas already reeling from months of exceptionally terrible weather. Now, a famed river is flowing over its banks. The River Thames has burst its banks after reaching its highest level in years, flooding riverside towns upstream of London, the Associated Press reported. Residents and British troops had piled up sandbags to protect properties from the latest bout of flooding, but the river overwhelmed their defenses Monday, leaving areas including the center of the village of Datchet underwater.

Winter Storm Pax Forecast: Swath of Southern Snow, Ice Monday through Wednesday; Possible Northeast Storm

Silver's picture

By: Chris Dolce , 02/10/2014

Winter Weather Alerts

If you live in the South, now is the time to prepare for another potentially disruptive winter storm. Winter Storm Pax will bring a long swath of ice and snow across the South through midweek, and the ice may accumulate enough in some areas to knock out power for thousands of people and litter roads with fallen tree limbs and downed wires. Travel will become difficult, if not impossible, in the hardest-hit areas. Pax may also impact the Middle Atlantic and Northeast with snow and ice later in the week.
