After a powerful winter storm knocked out power for more than one million people in the Northeastern United States, hundreds of thousands remain in the dark as utility crews rush to restore electricity. Dubbed “Winter Storm Nika” by the Weather Channel, this was the second blizzard to strike the Northeast this week. Nika dropped more than a foot of snow in some areas, but it did the most damage by creating such thick layers of ice on trees and power lines that some residents are expected to go days without electricity.

Snowfall Forecast

Winter Storm Orion will deliver some much needed snowpack to the western mountains. Snow will continue to fall at low elevations, creating travel problems along the I-5 corridor. Orion will also bring some light snow to parts of the Midwest and Northeast this weekend. The first in a series of disturbances moved into the Northwest on Thursday.

With cold air in place, snow fell in the lower elevations of northwest Oregon and far southwestern Washington, from Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, Wash. to Eugene, Ore.

Silver's picture

By: Sean Breslin, 02/06/2014

Western Europe is picking up damage left behind by a series of storms that have lashed coastlines over the last week, and conditions aren't going to improve yet. "The latest in a series of potent storms will blast into western Europe late Friday into Saturday," said weather.com meteorologist Chris Dolce. "Rain and gusty winds will extend from Ireland and the United Kingdom to France and Spain."

~Space Weather Update~ WEEKEND STORM WARNING

Lia's picture

WEEKEND STORM WARNING: Polar geomagnetic storms are possible on Saturdy, Feb. 8th, when a solar wind stream and a minor CME are expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. This will not be a major storm, but the double-impact could spark high-latitude auroras. Aurora alerts: text, voice

UNDER THE AURORAL OVAL: There is a place on Earth where you can see auroras almost every clear night even when there is no geomagnetic storm. It is under the auroral oval. The auroral oval is a donut of light around the poles which never goes completely dark because it is excited by energetic particles raining down from Earth's magnetosphere. Feb. 3rd was a very good night to be under the oval:

"What an amazing night this was!" says Alan Dyer of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. "On the night of Feb 3-4, despite all indicators showing quiet levels of activity, the sky exploded with a stunning all-sky display of rippling curtains across the sky. Churchill is under the prime auroral oval, so we see Northern Lights almost every clear night, even when official indicators are reading low or no geomagnetic storms."

~Space Weather Update~Weak Impact, M Class Flare, As The Sun Turns

Lia's picture

WEAK IMPACT: A weak disturbance in the solar wind swept past Earth on Feb 5th at ~1400 UT. It may have been the long-overdue CME of Jan 31st, finally arriving after five days in transit. The weak impact did not spark a geomagnetic storm. Aurora alerts: text, voice

AS THE SUN TURNS: Carried along by the sun's 27-day rotation, big sunspot AR1967 is turning away from Earth. Ironically this is making the active region even more dangerous. AR1967 is moving toward a location where the sun's spiraling magnetic field is well-connected to our planet and energetic particles can be funneled in our direction. An explosion there could spark a radiation storm around Earth. Click to watch the sun turn:

Monsoonal rains soak the tropics

Silver's picture

By: Kim Westcott, 02/05/2014

Rain has been drenching the majority of the nation's north these past few days, with today being no exception. The Northern Australian Monsoon has remained active across the tropics over the past week, which has led to an increase in convective activity and several tropical lows and cyclones which in turn has aided in widespread rainfall. Virtually everywhere in the Darwin-Daly district in the Northern Territory saw some rain to 9am this morning. With the lightest falls totaling 4 mm in Tindal and the heaviest in excess of 100 mm in Delamere. Similarly, barely anywhere was left untouched by rain in Queensland's Peninsula, with falls reaching up to 67 mm at Coen Airport. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Fletcher has also added to the vast amounts of rainfall seen across the Gulf Country. Kowanyama saw 339 mm in the last two days, making it its heaviest two day total since 1952.
