Hundreds of protesters broke away from a huge anti-austerity demonstration in London on Saturday, and attempted to storm various multi-national companies on Oxford Street, in the West End central shopping district.

The breakaway protest finished at Trafalgar Square around 1600GMT, after two hours of running skirmishes with the police.

Saturday's march was against the latest austerity cuts proposed by the UK government. Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Central London in support of the protest, organised by the TUC (Trades Union Congress).

BEIRUT: Young demonstrators angered by the recent assassination of a top intelligence officer in Beirut gathered Saturday at Martyrs’ Square in the capital and called on the government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati to step down over the affair.

The protesters, many belonging to the youth wings of March 14 coalition parties, waved their respective party flags and held posters of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan, one of the several killed in the Friday car bombing that ripped through the Beirut neighbourhood of Ashrafieh.

More than 100,000 people have taken part in a mass demonstration in central London against the Government's spending cuts.

Young demonstrators in London

Firefighters, nurses and teachers marched alongside unemployed youngsters, anti-war activists and other campaigners, while similar protests were held in Belfast and Glasgow. The London march ended with a rally in Hyde Park, where Labour leader Ed Miliband was among the speakers.

Mr Miliband was booed by a small section of the crowd when he said his party would have to make "hard choices" if it was in government.

The One Percent is not only increasing their share of wealth — they’re using it to spread millions among political candidates who serve their interests. Example: Goldman Sachs, which gave more money than any other major American corporation to Barack Obama in 2008, is switching alliances this year; their employees have given $900,000 both to Mitt Romney’s campaign and to the pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future. Why?

No Value in Any Influenza Vaccine: Cochrane Collaboration Study

OCTOBER 5, 2012 by ADMIN

This study is damning of the entire pharmaceutical industry and its minions, the drug testing industry and the medical system that relies on and promotes them. Influenza vaccines produce no benefit and cause serious harm. (Updated article.)Cochrane Logo Over Syringe

A remarkable study published in the Cochrane Library found no evidence of benefit for influenza vaccinations. It’s also damns the quality of flu vaccine studies by saying that the vast majority of trials were inadequate. The authors stated that the only ones showing benefit were industry-funded. They also pointed out that the industry-funded studies were more likely to be published in the most prestigious journals … and one more thing: They found cases of severe harm caused by the vaccines, in spite of inadequate reporting of adverse effects.

The study, Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy adults, is damning of the entire pharmaceutical industry and its minions: the drug testing industry and the medical system that both relies on and promotes them.

In the usual scientific journal style of understatement, the authors concluded:

The results of this review seem to discourage the utilisation of vaccination against influenza in healthy adults as a routine public health measure. As healthy adults have a low risk of complications due to respiratory disease, the use of the vaccine may be only advised as an individual protection measure against symptoms in specific cases.

The Study

The authors attempted to find and investigate every study that has evaluated the effects of flu vaccines in healthy adults aged 18-65. To this end, they “searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, 2010, issue 2), MEDLINE (January 1966 to June 2010) and EMBASE (1990 to June 2010).” They included 50 reports. Forty of them were clinical trials adding up to over 70,000 people. Two reported only on harmful effects and were not included in this study.  Studies of all types of influenza vaccines were included: live, attenuated, and killed—or fractions of killed—vaccines.

The TUC’s ruling body agreed to contact unions over a possible strike that would range across the public and private sectors such as school teachers, nurses, fuel tanker drivers and airline cabin crew.

A TUC spokesperson said, "We will now consult with member unions on the practicalities of a general strike. Whether members support such action will be the first step in that."

Youths have clashed with the Athens police force, pelting officers with stones and petrol bombs during an anti-austerity march. More than 40,000 have taken to the streets in Greece in a 24-hour strike against wage and pension cuts.

Anti-austerity activists faced down police officers, throwing Molotov cocktails and rocks in the center of Athens. Police responded by firing teargas and stun grenades into the group of adolescents to disperse them. Clashes erupted as protesters broke through a police line on central Syntagma Square. After the crowd was dispersed, the demonstration resumed peacefully.

Clashes in Greece ahead of EU summit

Protesters throw petrol bombs at riot police officers during a 24-hour nationwide general strike in Athens ahead of an EU leaders summit in Brussels.

Greek riot police have fired tear gas at protesters on the sidelines of a large anti-austerity rally in Athens during a national general strike as EU leaders prepared to tackle the eurozone crisis at a summit in Brussels.

As brief clashes broke out, officials said a 65-year-old protester collapsed and died from a heart attack but it was not immediately clear if his death was linked to the sporadic bursts of tear gas.
