Astronomers Enamored With The Extreme Storms On Uranus

Uranus is usually a pretty bland, unspectacular place. But lately, Uranus has been incredibly active! New photos of Uranus taken by a 10 meter Keck telescope on August 6, 2014 show bright bands of storms just raging across Uranus.

“The weather on Uranus is incredibly active,” professor and chair of astronomy at the University of California, Berkley Imke de Pater said. “This type of activity would have been expected in 2007, when Uranus’s once every 42 year equinox occurred and the sun shined directly on the equator.”

French astronomer Marc Delcroix was the first to process the amateur images taken by Regis de-Benedictis, followed by other amateur astronomers later in September and October. He photographed the storms over Uranus himself on October 3rd and 4th.
