A big and bright explosion left astronomers enthralling with rapt expression. The explosion was bigger and brighter than any explosion ever witnessed, with only Big Bang bigger than that.

The firework show was captured by orbiting telescopes last spring when gamma ray burst in a far-off galaxy was spotted.

NASA astrophysics chief Paul Hertz said that the event was once-in-a-century cosmic event. A gamma burst is known to occur when a massive star reaches its end. During this process, the star collapses into a brand-new black hole and then becomes a supernova, resulting into ejection of energetic radiation.
