SWIFTWATER rescue officers are on alert with roads cut, townships isolated and helicopters flying in urgent medical supplies as ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald hits far north Queensland.

More than 300mm has been recorded in parts of an 1100km-long band from Cape York to the Burdekin as authorities warn of flash flooding as far south as Mackay.
