. Just when you think things are getting quiet, the Sun says not so fast. A strong solar flare reaching M7.9 is currently in progress around Sunspot 1429. An R2 Radio Blackout resulted.

Just when you think things are getting quiet, the Sun says not so fast. A strong solar flare reaching M7.9 was detected around Sunspot 1429. An R2 Radio Blackout resulted on the sunlit side of the Earth. A Type II Radio Emission with a velocity of 1366 km/s was detected. It also appears that high energy proton levels are beginning to rise. Because AR11429 is now located towards the northwest limb, the chances for Earth directed Coronal Mass Ejections are not as good as compared to last week. We will have to wait until new images are available to determine if anything further is to be expected from this event including a possible CME.

Japan’s Sakurajima experiences its most violent eruption in 3 years

March 13, 2012 – JAPAN – Sakurajima continued its second day of violent eruptions on Tuesday, spewing hot rocks and ash, but there was no major damage in the vicinity, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said. The agency said Monday’s powerful eruption was the most forceful since 2009. The volcano is located in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima. The Meteorological Agency added that the volcano has been erupting steadily for the last two years, but the eruption on Monday turned violent, throwing 50-centimetre (1 foot 6 inches) rocks nearly 1.2 miles away, the furthest since 2009. In response, the Meteorological agency extended the eruption warning to residents living further away from the mouth of the volcano. The volcano has already had over 300 eruptions this year. Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan’s more active volcanoes, resumed activity in 1955 and has been active ever since. Sakurajima volcano in Japan’s southern Kagoshima prefecture erupts violently in what officials say is the most powerful since 2009, though there has been no damage so far. –Dig Triad

Climate-related disasters displace 42 million in Asia over 2 years

March 13, 2012 – ASIA – Climate-related disasters have displaced more than 42 million people in Asia over the past two years, the Asian Development Bank said Tuesday in a report calling for swift action to avert future crises.

New tropical cyclone Lua moving slowly off the Pilbara coast, Australia

A new tropical cyclone has formed off the Pilbara coast, Australia. On March 13th, 2012 Tropical Cyclone Lua (Category 1) was located at 8 pm WST near 18.5S 114.6E, that is 340 km northwest of Karratha and 385 km north of Exmouth and slow moving. TC Lua lies well north of the west Pilbara coast and is expected to slowly intensify and drift northwards for the next 24 hours. The system is then expected to continue intensifying and move southeast towards the east Pilbara coast later in the week.

Flash floods Australia – worst flooding in decades continues to threaten parts of state

One-third of New South Wales (NSW) communities have been declared natural disaster zones as the worst flooding in decades continues to threaten parts of the state. Four more natural disaster zones were declared on Tuesday March 13th, bringing the total to 53 out of NSW’s 152 local government areas.

The latest areas to be declared were Bombala, Murray Shire, Central Darling and Hay Shire.

Residents of Hay, in southwest NSW, were on evacuation alert on Tuesday night as the Murrumbidgee River crept towards a nine-metre flood peak – equal to heights not seen since 1974.
