Jamaica, southern U.S. brace for Sandy

(CNN) -- Tropical Storm Sandy became a hurricane Wednesday as it closed in on Jamaica, bringing strong winds and bouts of rain to the island.

By 11 a.m. ET, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was moving north-northeast at about 13 mph.
