Some of my 20-something friends and I have been noticing an interesting trend: there are almost no kids playing outside anymore. Nine times out of ten, I see the parks around my neighborhood completely empty. I feel more likely to see adults playing basketball at the courts than kids. Why is this?
Probably a number of reasons. Helicopter parenting, parents deeming the outdoors to just be totally unsafe, and probably video games and television too. But with food insecurity, or as I like to call it, ‘going hungry’ is on the rise and now 1 in 5 children lives in poverty, the knowledge of how to grow food is even more important.
So we have a responsibility to teach kids about agriculture, at home and at school. Do you agree?
