'A Quadruple Lunar Halo,' Earth and Space, Highly Commended. Tiny ice crystals high above the ground refract the moonlight, diverting it into a number of beautiful halos. (Dani Caxete, Spain)

As much as we love the moon, there’s a lot going on up in the sky besides our orbiting satellite. Entries to The Royal Observatory Greenwich’s fifth annual Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition are a poignant reminder of that, capturing the eerie green glow of the aurora borealis, the dusty clouds of distant galaxies and nebulae, the streaks of comets as they pass by overhead.

'Ring of Fire Sequence,' Our Solar System, Highly Commended. This composite shot shows the progress of an annular eclipse in May 2013. Close to the horizon the distorting effects of Earth’s atmosphere can also be seen. (Jia Hao, China)

In August, we showed you some of the submissions. Here are the winners and runners-up, which were announced on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
