Jonathan Livingston Seagull was written by Richard Bach and published in 1970. The novella inspired the production of a motion picture of the same title, with a soundtrack by Neil Diamond.
After a near-fatal plane crash in August 2012, Richard Bach was inspired to pen a final chapter to his story.
This book about spirituality is an easy and quick read unless one wishes to delve further into what Bach and Jonathan are really saying: that we are so much more than we think we are. That all we have to do is break free and have the courage to fly. That breaking free and flying will allow us to feel kind of Joy that we all deserve to feel.
"When Jonathan Seagull joined the Flock on the beach, it was full night. He was dizzy and terribly tired. Yet in delight he flew a loop to landing, with a snap roll just before touchdown. When they hear of it, he thought, of the Breakthrough, they'll be wild with joy. How much more there is now to living! Instead of our drab slogging forth and back to the fishing boats, there's a reason to life! We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can be Free! We can learn to fly!"

I Echo This Sentiment
Read Jonathan Livingston Seagull several times in the early 70s after I joined my first Personal Development group, in which I stayed for 5 years. That was the beginning of my journey.
Here's my 2 cents to Richard Bach's follow up:
