A senior police chief in Portugal has resigned after thousands of outraged off-duty officers broke through a security cordon near the country’s parliament to protest the government’s new austerity measures.

The Portuguese Interior Ministry announced in a statement on Friday that Superintendent Paulo Gomes, who led one of Portugal’s three main police forces, quit his post following the defiant anti-austerity demonstration in the capital, Lisbon.
