From the year's most potent tornado outbreaks happening in winter, to record-smashing March warmth, to a winter storm just one week after what may be the costliest storm on record to hit the Northeast, 2012 was an odd year for U.S. weather.
An overarching theme to this strange weather year was record warmth. Through November, the U.S. had virtually clinched its warmest year on record, topping the previous record from 1998.
