Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the bright half of Vaishakh month (April – May), when the Sun and Moon are in exaltation. This year it falls on May 12th. As Sun, the lord of the planets and the Moon the lord of creativity (sense) are exalted, the day is believed to be an auspicious one. This attractive planetary confluence, which happens only once a year, becomes the perfect conditions for gaining wealth and power.

Legends behind Akshaya Tritiya

There are many stories behind Akshaya Tritiya. According to Hindu legends, the day is by tradition celebrated as the birthday of Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Archetypal Being Vishnu. On Akshaya Tritiya, Ganesha the elephant-headed God started writing the epic Mahabharata to Ved Vyas's dictation.

The most famous of the Akshaya Tritiya stories is the legend of Lord Krishna and Sudama, his poor Brahmin friend. On this day, Sudama came over to Krishna requesting him for some financial help and Lord Krishna treated him with lot of wealth and riches. Therefore, Akshaya Tritiya is associated with material gains and wealth acquisition.

On this day, people conduct special Poojas and do charity. Doing charity is one of the important phases of Akshaya Tritiya because it is assumed that feeding poor people, feeding the cow and calf etc will bring blessings from the Divine.
