Honey is certainly a superfood of sorts. It’s packed with vitamin A, B2, B3, B5, C, biotin and rutine. It also contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, iodine, and zinc. Kind of wild to think that one simple food can pack such a healthy punch.

But did you know it can also combat bacterial pathogens? According to Susan M. Meschwitz, Ph.D., honey uses a combination of methods to kill bacteria. One of which is the osmotic effect, which originates in honey’s high sugar concentration. In it, water is drawn from the bacteria cells, leaving the pathogens dehydrated and dead.

Additionally, Biochemist Peter Molan studied natural antibiotics like honey for over 25 years. His findings concluded that manuka honey is the most effective at killing bacteria; even antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
