Natural Remedies: Take A Mental Break With Eucalyptus

The medicinal gifts of the Eucalyptus were most likely first discovered by the Aborigines of Australia. So strong are its remedies for skin problems and fevers that it has long been called the "fever tree."

The oil extracted from the leaves and branches of the Eucalyptus tree contains eucalyptol, which has strong germicidal and disinfectant properties. It also helps relieve cough and fever, can improve mental fatigue, and can relieve muscle, nerve and joint pain. (All of the remedies listed here are for external use only.)
Eucalyptus oil is potent so be sure to use the exact amounts found here. Too much can irritate the skin; combining it with a massage oil like olive oil will reduce irritants. Keep Eucalyptus oil away from children under age 6.

Insects don't like Eucalyptus oil so you can add a few drops in a diffuser or onto a light bulb where the heat will dissipate the oils and encourage bugs to leave.

A little goes a long way, but do you know why Eucalyptus oil seems pricey when compared to other essential oils? It takes nearly 110 pounds of plant material to make about 2 pounds of oil through a special steam distillation process!

For mental fatigue: Prepare a quiet space for yourself (off with the tv, cell phone, etc.), wear comfortable clothing (or none at all), silence or your favorite soothing music, and your most comfortable chair or set of pillows to relax on. Light a tea candle under a diffuser and combine 4 drops of Eucalyptus oil and 2 drops of Lemon oil into the diffuser. When you treat yourself to a healing atmosphere you can eliminate the damages done by mental exhaustion and feelings of listlessness. You can also apply a little of this oil blend onto the pulse points of your wrist, inner arm, or neck.

To purify a sickroom: five drops of Eucalyptus oil in a diffuser will reduce the number of airborne bacteria and prevent those germs from spreading.

For wounds and abscesses: placing a few drops of Eucalyptus oil on the dressing or bandage before covering a wound or insect bite area takes advantage of the oils strong germicidal effects.

For coughs: make a chest compress with 2 drops of Eucalyptus oil in a massage oil. Apply it to the chest then cover with a cloth or cotton T-shirt to help loosen phlegm and improve the lung function. Leave in place for 20-30 minutes. You can either gently wash the oils from the skin (don't scrub!) or leave on as you go about your day. You can also put a few drops of the oil on a handkerchief and deeply inhale the aroma as needed.

In a hot-stone sauna: a very popular spa remedy is to place 3 drops of Eucalyptus oil in a ladleful of water and then pour it over the hot stones in a sauna.

For a fever: (note- do this only if your symptoms include "warm feet" not for use during fever periods producing "cold feet:) It's called a Calf Wrap. Add 5 drops of Eucalyptus oil to 1 quart of lukewarm water. Soak linen or cotton cloths in the mixture, then wrap the cloths around your calves and secure with dry cloths. Leave in place until the calf wrap has dried, then gently shower off your entire body in warm water. Avoid becoming chilled and drink plenty of fluids to replace what has been lost.

For dandruff: mix 10 drops of Eucalyptus oil with your current shampoo, massage into your scalp and wait a few minutes before rinsing.

For muscle, nerve or joint pain: mix 10-15 drops of Eucalyptus oil into 2 ounces of sweet almond, grapeseed, or olive oil. Massage this directly into the painful sites.

Overnight relief from sinus and chest congestion: combine 5 drops of Eucalyptus oil with 1 drop of Peppermint oil in a bowl. Add crushed Eucalyptus leaves, Peppermint leaves, Coltsfoot and Comfrey herbs and stir until the solid materials are coated with the oils. Put this mixture in a clean sock, knot the end of it and place the sock inside your pillowcase overnight.
