Stretching Science: Light Comes To The Rescue In Identifying GM Products

(editor's note: Monsanto and other corporations who produce genetically modified (GM) crops have been notoriously silent when asked by consumer groups to identify themselves in food packaging. Science to the rescue! These products are being targeted by bioluminescent technology. This branch of "light science" makes GM products easier to track both in the field and anywhere along the food and drug processing chain.

In my daily treks through the news files of the world I'm amazed at the depth and scope of emerging science technologies! In the bigger picture of our changing world, we understand that these are stepping stones towards joining our Galactic community of scientists.

Bioluminescent Technology for Easy Tracking of GMO

New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Biotechnology shows that products from genetically modified crops can be identified at low concentration, using bioluminescent real time reporter (BART) technology and loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). The combination of these techniques was able to recognise 0.1% GM contamination of maize, far below the current EU limit of 0.9%.
