Soldiers recovered more bodies as they cleared debris in villages flattened by landslides and monsoon floods in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, bringing the death toll from torrential rains above 1,000, the home minister said on Monday.
Army officials suspended rescue operations after bad weather early Monday reduced visibility in the mountainous area. Army troops are attempting to rescue more than 10,000 stranded people, many in the temple town of Badrinath. Link: Guardian.uk.world
On 6/25/13 Press.tv.ir reports The death toll from the devastating floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in northern India has risen to 5,000.
"At least 5,000 people must have been killed in the deluge that inflicted heavy damage on vast tracts of land especially in Kedarnath Valley," India’s Disaster Management Minister Yashpal Arya told reporters on Sunday.
More than 19,000 people are still said to be stranded in the mountainous areas of Uttarakhand State, the epicenter of the flooding. Link: Press.tv.ir
